Because where I live there are no resources for learning Ukranian!! Also, there were many reasons for me to learn Russian which predate my decision to seek a Ukranian husband. One example, more people speak Russian than Ukranian, but this doesn't mean I think Ukranian is less important than Russian. More people speak English than Spanish, but I still speak Spanish everyday with friends and family.
The fact that I understand Russian and you understand English makes it much easier for us to communicate than if I spoke only Spanish and you spoke only Ukranian. I once knew a Belarusan who spoke Russian, Belarusan, English and Portuguese. We would converse in a mixture of Russian, English, Spanish and Portuguese with German curse words thrown in. It was a lot of fun!
If I marry a Ukranian and he wants me to learn his native language, I would be happy to. But he'll have to learn my native language, Spanish. ;^) Just joking!
