My husband and I invited my mom twice already - the first time she came, we wrote her an invitation letter in which we mentioned why we are inviting her (I have not seen her for over a year by then), the reason why I can't go there (new job - 1 week of vacation at the time), what we were going to do (places to visit, things to see), also that my husband's family will be organizing events for her to meet them all (BIG crowd), we stated the time frame when she would come if granted the visa (less than 1 month because of her job, it would look suspicious if her stay is longer, and make sure that she stays exactly that long), and also that we will be covering all of her expenses to come to US and stay with us. I had to send a copy of my green card, and we also stated that my mom was legally and financially liable to her place of employement to return to Ukraine. We were very blessed that my mom had only to show the invitation and a copy of my green card, fill out the application form and pay the dues, and she was approved for the visa!!! The second time she was coming to US, she only showed the invitation letter and her passport (which showed that she did spend less than 1 month in the US the first time) and she got a multiple entry visa for 3 years.
We also kept in touch with both our Senator's and Congressman's offices who checked on the visa process, but I do not know how effective it was.
