Help! Marriage and the F-1 VISA

I have been with my girlfriend for over a year and a half and we discussed marriage but are unsure of what to expect or how to approach it.

Can anyone tell me what to expect? I am under the impression a Ukrainian student on an f-1 Visa has to return home for a minimum of 2 years after their Visa expires before they can return to the US. What if a US citizen who can provide financial support were to marry them in the US before their student Visa expired? Would they still have to leave? What is the process? Is there any way to avoid any seperation during this process? Please all, give me some advice! I have done research but am still very confused. The only thing I do know is I will die without her.
