: : Dear Ukrainian 2,

: : Thanks for the link on dual citizenship. As to the property laws in Ukraine, I do not think that Ukraine has a solid legal base for ownership of property / land neither for its citizens nor foreigners. Unfortunately, just because you maintain your Ukrainian passport will not guarantee that you will be able to own or keep anything (think: Great October revolution?).

: : On the other hand, I heard that US laws (especially dealing with estate / inheritance) might prohibit or limit your rights if you are not a US citizen. I have not looked into this, but maybe someone who's reading knows more about the issue from a US perspective.

: : Lena

: : Dear Ukrainian2,

: : Have you heard about any Ukrainian laws that prohibit citizens from other countries owing property in Ukraine? I'd think that, say, an American-born person can just go and purchase whatever he or she wants in Ukraine, right? Ukraine is supposed to be (sort of) free democratic country by now... Then it should not be different for naturalized American citizens or anybody else who loses Ukrainian citizenship.

: Dear Lena and Anya,
: ==================
: I can agree with you that one of the main reasons to apply for American citizenship is to hide away (or protect you and your near and dear) from all possible and hypothetical mishaps that an average Ukrainian is destined to suffer thru all his/her life. And that's a great and noble reason. I am not going to argue about that. The question is rather like this: if you still have an emotional and/or a material link to Ukraine, do you really want to sever it once and forever? And that's fine if you say: "YES!, I want to take it out of my mind, stamp it out of my heart, erase it out of my memory, I don't want my children have any ties with that horrible ancestry of mine, etc." That's fine if you say so. That's even greater if you can really do it. I just found that I can't change my own history, can't forget my friends and places where I was happy. I'd rather try to change the future. That was emotional part.

: And the property issue is important as well. I own a spacious apartment in Ukraine. Believe it or not but it costs good money. And I am pretty sure I'll lose it if lose Ukrainian citizenship.

: And by the way West European countries like France or Switzerland do not allow even a dual citizen to inherit land property if the person lives permanently in USA. You can come and buy it though paying loads of $$$, but can't get it as a gift.

: It could be real nice to get a good advice from somebody who was or is in the same kind of situation. Do you know anybody?
