Olena, just go get a visa as an American citizen. I have not heard from anyone who would be refused in getting the visa because they still have Ukrainian pasport or because you are "still" Ukrainian citizen. Russians do that, but Russians are allowed to travel with 2 pasports. Damn.... Why am I not Russian?... :-)
P.S. As you said, you are not registered with them. So how do they know what you have, what you don't have, and who you are :-)
