You don't have to travel to Houstom to get a visa. You may get it by mail. When I needed Shengen visa from Italy I've got it by mail in 1 week.
You may get Shengen transit visa in de Gaulle airport for overnight stop. Your chances of getting the transit visa would be higher if you had advance hotel reservation, and if you speak French.
There would be no problem sleeping in the airport as well. It happened to me when I traveled from U.S. to Kiev through Paris. My plane from U.S. (American Airline) was 6 hours late and I missed my plane to Kiev. So they put my on the next morning flight at 7 am. At that time I actually had a Shengen visa, so I spend evening in Paris, then I came to the airport after 1am, and I waited for my flight there. (I didn't want to pay for a hotel).
