Immigration law is very complex; it's a specialized field of law. When looking for legal assistance in the field of immigration lawyer, it's usually best to find an attorney (or not-for-profit organization -- see url below) who practices only (or almost only) immigration law. It's often not a good idea to go with immigration issues to a lawyer who practices general law.
At the very least, check to see if the lawyer is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (ÀILA) or CLINIC (Catholic Legal Immigration Network). Those two organizations provide training and information to lawyers on the continuous changes in immigration law. any lawyer who practices immigration law and is not a member of one of the two networks is usually not serious about the immigration part of the practice.
If you are looking for an immigration lawyer, it's often a good idea to ask other professionals for a recommendation. You can ask lawyers who are in general practice to recommend someone whose practice is limited to immigration law.
Not-for-profit agencies that are accredited by the Board of Immigration Appeals (the list is found at
http://www.usdoj.gov/eoir/probono/states.htm) can recommend good immigration attorneys, as well.
