The West Education NGOs in Ukraine give a job to a buch of half-educated Americans and their Ukrainian underpaid voiceless colleagues but the results of their activity have absolutely no influence on the processes in the country.Pavlo.
"Outside the rosy and vastly improving appearance of Ukraine's capital, Ukraine has serious problems. Its citizens, who rank near the bottom of their European brothers in life expectancy and per capita income but dubiously far ahead in rates of alcoholism and infant mortality, lack the fundamental tools to organize politically in the sense of acting on behalf of themselves or their communities, not just being forcibly enlisted in a political party at election time. And yet those NGOs officially representing the democratic West have nothing more to say about the upcoming course of events here?
No one ever said it would be easy to teach civic participation in a society where independent political thought was virtually annihilated during the Soviet era, if it ever existed before. But it will be far easier to teach these lessons today than to wait a year from now when Kuchma and Lukashenko might otherwise be comparing notes."
