If you have documentation correspondence from INS showing that you have applied for another visa and have the letter explaining the delay, you may want to take that with you.
Another idea would be to take your Social Security card and go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and obtain a State Identification Card. This is accepted as identification at the airports and may cause you less hassle than trying to get a driver's liscense.
You may also want to go to the ticket desk of the airlines with your passport and documentation and explain your delima and ask if you would be able to purchase an airplane ticket.
