The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is pleased to present Downshifting, an exhibition linked with the Project Millennium theme: Transitions. This exhibition has its focus on children and grandchildren of the Eastern European diaspora, looking at how ethnocentricity might inform individuals growing up and assimilating in a new world.

On view are paintings, photographs, sculpture, mixed media installations and assemblage. Although the aesthetic sensibility displayed covers the spectrum of 20th century art history, the subtle yet undeniable link is the relationship of each artist to his/her ancestry. Their references to an immigrant history may be direct or oblique, however, they share a common warmth and respect far a culture that, though it is geographically distant, remains a potent emotional force.

Participating artists include: Carolyn Ard (Indianapolis, IN), Marilyn Collins (Austintown, OH), Myrosha Dziuk (Newton, MA), Susan Gofstein (Chicago, IL), Paul Krainak (Morgantown, WV), Darlene Kryza (Chicago, IL), Lorraine Peltz (Chicago, IL), Wrik Repasky (Chicago, IL), Stan Strembicki (St Louis, MO), and Barbara Toczydlowska (Chicago, IL).

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA), a not for profit arts organization, was founded in 1971. For over 25 years UIMA has served the local community and greater Chicago area with a program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and multi-disciplinary events. The programs presented by UIMA are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
