Bandura Downtown Presents Roman Hrynkiv

On Friday Dec. 10 the New York Bandura Ensemble will present the second concert of its new BANDURA DOWNTOWN series, a solo performance by bandura virtuoso Roman Hrynkiv. The event takes place at 7:30 pm at the Mayana Gallery 136 2nd Ave. (4th floor) and is co-sponsored by the Ukrainian Arts and Literary Club. $7 at the door.

Roman Hrynkiv is one of Ukraine's leading contemporary bandura performers and a Senior Instructor of bandura at the Ukrainian National Academy of Music in Kyiv. He is a laureate of Ukrainian and international competitions, and has been awarded the title of Merited Artist of Ukraine. Recent recordings include a solo CD Avstraliiski Mandry and Winter Nights (Telarc 1999), a collaboration with jazz guitarist Al Di Meola.

Bandura Downtown is a new series showcasing the best of today's bandurists in intimate venues in the East Village - the crossroads of the downtown arts scene and New York's traditional Ukrainian community. We will draw on local musicians and visiting artists to present performances in a variety of styles, from the deepest tradition to the exploratory and genre-bending.

Bandura Downtown is an outgrowth of the informal series of professional solo and small ensemble performances presented by the New York Bandura Ensemble over the years. New York Bandura Ensemble programs are made possible by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency.
