Bandura Downtown - Experimental Bandura Trio CD Preview
On Friday Nov. 19 at 7:30pm The New York Bandura Ensemble presents the season's first concert in the Bandura Downtown series: The Experimental Bandura Trio's CD Preview. The event is at 7:30 pm at the Mayana Gallery 136 2nd Ave. (4th floor) and is co-sponsored by the Ukrainian Arts and Literary Club. $7 at the door.
The members of the Experimental Bandura Trio (NYBE Music Director Julian Kytasty, Mike Andrec, and Jurij Fedynsky) have worked intensively over the past three summers to develop a repertoire of innovative music for the bandura. The trio's music creates a new language for a traditional instument, combining contemporary influences from minimalism to free jazz with rhythms, textures, and modes drawn from ancient epic songs.
The evening's program will include material recorded for the group's debut CD, scheduled for release early next year. Join the artists afterward for a glass of wine and a first listening to tracks from the CD.
Bandura Downtown is a new series showcasing the best of today's bandurists in intimate venues in the East Village - the crossroads of the downtown arts scene and New York's traditional Ukrainian community. We will draw on local musicians and visiting artists to present performances in a variety of styles, from the deepest tradition to the exploratory and genre-bending. The next concert in the series will be December 10 and will feature Kyiv bandurist Roman Hrynkiv.
Bandura Downtown is an outgrowth of the informal series of professional solo and small ensemble performances presented by the New York Bandura Ensemble over the years. New York Bandura Ensemble programs are made possible by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency.
