Kuchma overpowers his opponent Symonenko: the Ukrainian electorate says "NO" to soviet-like rule
NEW YORK -- With approximately 98.5% of the returns counted from 95.96% of the poll stations reporting, Leonid Kuchma is the undisputed victor in the 1999 Presidential Elections of Ukraine. At 15:05 hours (8:05am EST), the vote count stands at 15,307,207 for Kuchma versus 10,263,011 for his Communist Party opponent Petro Symonenko.
According to the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Ukraine, the breakdown is as follows:
