UNWLA Logo UNWLA Participates in the Washington Conference

Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA) is holding its session on Friday, the 25th of June 1999 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Joint Conference of Ukrainian American Organizations in Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA. Barbara Bachynsky, Recording Secretary of UNWLA will moderate the program.

The morning session will be a briefing on "All the Things You Wanted To Know about the UNWLA". The UNWLA 75-year-old history gives us a vision of our accomplished past that has evolved into a meaningful present. We are encouraging people to come together to discuss and examine the major approaches that the organization should take as we move into the next century. The opportunity to participate and learn from the exciting discussions may be a wonderful experience for all of us, members and non-members. We can make the difference if we are part of shaping a better future for ourselves and the UNWLA. The speakers for the morning session are: Oxana Farion, Sophia Hewryk, Anna Krawczuk, Hanna Krill and Iryna Kurowyckyj.

The afternoon session addresses the following areas of concern: "Women's Health During Their Lifetime in the USA and Ukraine". The fourth world Conference on Women recognized that the right to health includes the right to protect one self from threats to health. The right to health belongs to both men and women, but it has special significance for women. The right to health is one of the fundamental Human Rights. Speakers are Zoreslava Shkiryak-Nyzhnyk, M.D., Professor of Medicine from Kyiv, Ukraine and Susan C. Stewart, M.D., former President of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA). She has continued to work within AMWA as that organization has taken an ever more active role as an advocate for women's health concerns. She is co-editor of AMWA' S Women's Complete Healthbook. Dr. Stewart served as Associate Medical Director at the headquarters of J.P. Morgan, Inc., in New York City for the past twenty years. Dr. Stewart is Women' s Health editor of the Internet Medical Faculty, "CYBEROUNDS."

The topic "Can U.S. Labor Laws be Changed to Help Women in Ukraine" will be addressed by a representative from the US Labor Department (to be announced), and Alexandra-Isaievych-Mason, Princeton University.

"Genetic Engineering; Blessing or Hindrance": will be addressed by a Monsanto representative, Tamra E. Raven, who holds degrees from Stanford University and San Diego State University, and Martha Pelenskyj, degree in engineering from New York University. A speaker from the Federal Drug Administration has also been invited.

Concern about the growth of genetically engineered foods that could have serious long-term health and environmental consequences has expanded rapidly. Widely distributed, genetically modified foods are unlabeled. Why are foods on our shelves not labeled as such? It is our human right to know what we eat, what we drink and about the air we breathe.

There will be a $25.00 registration fee for this program. This is the time to address these issues. Come one come all!

Iryna Kurowycky
President, UNWLA
