Iryna Kurowyckyj - Newly Elected President of UNWLA
We are very pleased to announce the election of Iryna Kurowyckyj to the post of President of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA). The elections took place at the 25th UNWLA Convention in Chicago, Ill which was held May 28-31, 1999. Ms. Kurowycky is a dynamic issue-oriented individual who has been active in local, national and international arenas for many years. Congratulations and best wishes for a successful term in office! Until May 1999, Iryna Kurowyckyj served as vice president of the UNWLA. Iryna became a member of the UNWLA in 1964 and has held several positions in Branch 83 in New York, including the current position of administrator for the Branch 83 pre-kindergarten. Iryna also served on the National Board of the UNWLA in several capacities. From 1981-84 she was the Public Relations Chair, from 1984-90 she served on the Executive Committee as a member at large. Most importantly, Iryna represented the UNWLA in the National Council of Women (NCW) U.S. from 1981 to 1990; she served on the Executive Committee of NCW/US from 1987 and from 1982 served on the International Hospitality Committee. Iryna was elected president of the NCW in 1993. In 1995 she became an Honorary President. Iryna is a United Nations Non-governmental Organizations (NGO) representative for the World Movement of Mothers since 1982, International Council of Women (ICW) since 1995, and since 1996 the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations. She is a member of the following committees at the UN NGO: Committee on the Family, Status of Women, Mental Health, and UNICEF. As NCW President and United Nations NGO representative, Iryna Kurowyckyj has attended many meetings around the world on various women's causes. She participated in the ICW plenary meetings in London, Washington DC, Paris, and Ottawa. Iryna was invited to participate and speak at the "Women in Democracy" conferences in Kyiv in 1995. Iryna was also part of a panel coordinated by the Danish NCW and an active member of North American and Eastern Commonwealth Countries caucuses during the World Summit for Social Development in 1995 in Copenhagen. That same year Iryna attended numerous briefings at the United Nations in preparation for the World Conference on Women in Beijing and she attended the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. She was a speaker in several workshops at the NGO Forum. Iryna attended the`Vital Voices: Women in Democracy" Conference in Vienna in 1997.

The Ukrainian National Women's League of America, Inc. was founded in New York City in 1925, adopted its Bylaws, Charter and became incorporated in 1935. The UNWLA received its nonprofit tax exempt status in 1979 under IRS Code Section 501 (c)(3) GN 1894. Since that time activities of the UNWLA are limited to charitable, educational and cultural endeavors. This fully corresponds to organizational needs and prior programs of: membership, culture, public relations, press, social welfare, education, art/museum, scholarship and ecology committees. All members of the UNWLA National Board work on a volunteer basis, without compensation. Functioning in a democratic country, the UNWLA is guided in its activities by the principles of Christian ethics, religious tolerance, political nonpartisanship and the support of human rights within the framework of its IRS Status. The UNWLA has been a self governed Ukrainian American women's organization for almost 75 years. The Ukrainian National Women's League of America, Inc., was founded by five Ukrainian women's associations with the goal of establishing a unified National organization. For its growth and expansion, UNWLA Branches were founded throughout the Continental USA. For better coordination it was necessary to establish Regional Councils. In 1999 the UNWLA has nine Regional Councils that govern the Branches in their immediate regions. At this time there are eleven Branches-at-large under the leadership of the Liaison of Branches-at-large. UNWLA Regional Council presidents and the Liaison for Branches-at-large are officers of the UNWLA National Board. Due to professional and family responsibility, many young Ukrainian American women are members-at-large, The principal goal of the UNWLA is to unite women of Ukrainian descent (or belonging to the Ukrainian community) who live in the United States of America, in order to preserve Ukrainian ethnic identity, culture and heritage within the framework of a humanitarian organization. Diversity has enriched the ranks of the UNWLA and is instrumental in meeting the needs of these modem times. During the Soviet Regime and the enslavement of Ukraine, our goal was to keep Ukraine alive in the USA and in the international arena. Since the independence of Ukraine in 1991 our goal has been to assist the young republic economically, so it can become a fully democratic state. In 1948 UNWLA was a founding member of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations. At the present time, twenty-four Ukrainian women's organizations in the Diaspora are members of this federation. UNWLA is also a member of the World Congress of Ukrainians. Since 1948 UNWLA has been associate member of the International General Federation of Women's Clubs. in 1952 UNWLA's membership was approved by the National Council of Women conventions throughout the years, including the last one in Ottawa, Canada in 1997. It was a historic moment for the UNWLA when UNWLA VP Iryna Kurowyckyj was elected president (1993-1995) of NCW/USA. Our delegates participated in all the UN World Conferences on Women (Mexico 1975, Copenhagen 1980, Nairobi 1985). It was with great joy that we welcomed the delegation from Ukraine at the 4th UN World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, in 1995. Since 1935 UNWLA has published Convention books. In 1941 a UNWLA 15th Anniversary book was published. From 1944 and without interruption, UNWLA has published the monthly Our Life bilingual magazine. UNWLA is the only Ukrainian American women's organizations to succeed in this endeavor. The UNWLA has started its activity with publishing translations of some of the poems of Lesia Ukrajinka The Spirit of Flame, followed by Poems -Old and New by Natalia Livycka Cholodna, Ukrainian Women's Bibliography Beyond the Borders of Ukraine (1940-1973) by Natalia Chaplenko, Bilym po Bilomu... Women in Ukrainian Community Life, 1884-1939 by Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak, and many others on subjects from education to art. The latest one - the documents and speeches of Milena Rudnytzky, coedited by Ms. Chomiak in 1998. UNWLA Branches and Regional Councils also contribute to publications. From the founding of our organization, humanitarian/charitable programs were at the heart of UNWLA. The first Medical fund was established in 1930. This was followed in 1933 by the fund to aid the Famine Victims in Ukraine. During and after World War II aid was given to Widows with Children. UNWLA Social Welfare was always ready to give assistance to Ukrainians when the need arose be it in the USA, Ukraine or the Diaspora. Among its continuous programs is aid to orphans, widows, the elderly, invalids and the infirm. Since 1990 attention was given to Chornobyl nuclear disaster victims by donating medical equipment and sending hundreds of Chornobyl children to health centers in Ukraine. As this is going to print, a huge undertaking by the membership of the UNWLA is underway to help the victims of severe flooding in Transcarpathian Ukraine. The UNWLA Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program was founded in 1967, although the first scholarship to needy student was awarded in 1932. The key to this program is to provide an opportunity for needy students to receive a higher education thus bettering their lives. From its beginnings in Poland, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, in 1989 it expanded to Eastern European countries, including Ukraine. In the course of 30 years over 800 students became productive professionals. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors in the USA, Canada and Australia, UNWLA Branches and members, UNWLA scholarship recipients from seventeen different countries are in this program. For this great achievement, the UNWLA Scholarship Program was awarded St. Wolodymyr Medal at the 7th World Congress of Ukrainians held in Toronto, Canada, in December of 1998. From the Memorial Fund of Eva Stashkiv stipends are awarded annually to UNWLA members. Administrated by the Program, they are approved by the UNWLA Executive Committee. Since 1967 based on competition, annual awards are given from the Lesia and Petro Kovaliv fund for historic and literary works with a Ukrainian theme. In the past three years the authors have been from Ukraine. Although it is administered by the UNWLA Executive Committee, the annual contest is the responsibility, of the UNWLA VP for culture and a selected jury of professionals. The UNWLA Education program is geared to preschools and day care centers. During the course of the years, books and proper materials were administered by our organization -The Year of the Family 1994 and Nature and US in 1998. They gave an insight into family values and ecology, as seen through the eyes of the younger generation. Booklets with the same titles were published by UNWLA. The UNWLA has always been part of the Ukrainian and Ukrainian American societies. In 1932 the First Women's Congress in the USA was called into action by the UNWLA. In 1940 it was a cofounder of the Ukrainian Congress Committee and was a member until 1983. The Ukrainian Museum in New York was founded by the UNWLA in 1976. UNWLA is a coowner of the building at 203 Second Avenue, New York, NY - the home of the UM. It was in 1926 that the first exhibit of Ukrainian folk arts and crafts was shown in New York City, followed by many others throughout the Continental USA. In 1933 UNWLA purchased a collection of Ukrainian folk art and crafts (800 in all), which was part of the first ethnographic exhibit of the UM in 1976. The highest legislative power of the UNWLA is the Convention. Parliamentary procedure shall be governed by Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, provided they are not in conflict with the provisions of UNWLA BYLAWS. As in prior Conventions reports will be heard and approved, recommendations and resolutions accepted and the UNWLA National Board will be elected for the next three years. All the officers of the National Board, as well as in Branches and Regional Councils are volunteers and work without compensation. This strengthens our organization a thousand-fold for they all work with conviction in UNWLA ideals for the benefit of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, the Ukrainian American communities in the USA, and the Ukrainian communities in the Diaspora and in Ukraine. |

КОРОТКА ІСТОРІЯ СОЮЗУ УКРАЇНОК АМЕРИКИ Союз Українок Америки заснований 1925 р. у Нью-Йорку. Прийнявши Статут, став інкорпорований в 1935 р. та одержав державний статус неприблуткової, звільненої від оподаткування, корпорації під кодом 501(c)(3) в 1979 р. Під статусом харитативної організації діяльність СУА обмежена до гуманітарної, виховної та культорно-освітньої. Це повністю відповідає завданням СУА та діяльности референтур: організаційної, культури, зв'язків, преси, суспільної опіки, виховної, мистецько-музейної, стипендій та екології. Керуючись принципами християнської етики, релігійної толерантности, політичної понадпартійности та демократичних засад, Союз Українок Америки діє самостійно 75 років. СУА був започаткований п'ятьма українськими жіночими товариствами, які з'єдналися з метою створення самостійної краєвої організації. Згодом творилися відділи під назвою Союз Українок Америки. Для кращої координації діяльности створено Окружні Управи до яких належать територіяльно зближені відділи. У 1999 р. діє дев'ять Окружних Управ. Дванадцять відділів далекого віддалення є під керівництвом зв'язкової. Голови Окружних Управ та зв'язкова відділів далекого віддалення входять до Головної Управи СУА. Через професійні та родинні обов'язки багато жінок стає в ряди вільного членства СУА, яке під цю пору начисляє біля 150 членів. Метою СУА є об'єндати жінок українського походження (або приналежних до української громади), які живуть у Сполученних Штатах Америки, незалежно від їніх релігійних чи політичних переконань. Різноманітність членства збагатила ряди СУА та дала нагоду демократично діяти із духом та вимогами часу. У часі поневолення України метою СУА було втримати Україну живою у США та на міжнародній арені. Від 1991 року -- часу незалежности України -- нашою метою є сприяти Україні, впливаючи на американські чинники, гуманітарною допомогою та прикладом демократичної діяльности. У 1948 році СУА був співосновником Світової Федерації Українських Жіночих Організацій до якої належать 24 українські жіночі організації у діяспорі. Союз Українок Америки є членом Світового Конґресу Українців. Від 1948 р. СУА є асоціятивним членом Генеральної Федерації Жіночих Клюбів. Знову ж, приналежність до Національної Ради Жінок США від 1952 року, уможливила ущасть СУА в усіх Конвенціях Міжнародної Ради Жінок включно із останньою 1997 р. в Оттаві, Канада. Ми мали нагоду брати активну участь у Всесвітніх Конвенціях Організації Об'єднаних Націй для справ жінок (Мехіко 1975, Копенгаґен 1980, Найробі 1985) та обстоювати права жінок в Україні. У 1995 році делеґатки СУА радо вітали представниць з України у Бейжінґу, Китаї. СУА гордиться тим, що президентом Національної Ради Жінок США у 1993-1995 роках була заступниця голови СУА Ірина Куровицька. Це вперше українка очолила НРЖ/США за 108 років їхнього існування. ВИДАВНИЧА ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ У 1941 році видано Ювілейну книжку з нагоди 15-ліття СУА і від 1935 р. кожної Конвенції виходить Конвенційна книга. Від 1944 р. СУА щомісяця видає журнал "Наше Життя" -- єдиний журнал української жіночої організації в США, який безперервно видається понад 55 років. СУА започаткував видавничу діяльність перекладом деяких творів Лесі Українки "The Spirit of Flame", перевидав збірку поезій "Перший Вінок", видав "Поезії старі і нові" Наталії Лівицької-Холодної. “Бібліографію видань жіночої творчости поза межами України – 1940-1973” Наталії Чапленко, "Білим по білому -- жінки в громадському житті України. 1884-1939" Марти Богачевської Хом'як та багато видань на різні теми. Останньо - (1998 р.) книжку "Мілена Рудницька -- статті, листи, документи", співредактором якої була Марта Хом'як. Відділи та округи також беруть активну участь у видавничій ділянці. ГУМАНІТАРНА ДОПОМОГА Від 1925 р. найбільше поширеною є референтура Суспільної Опіки. Вона включає Медичний Фонд, який вперше був створений у 1930 р. для допомоги Україні. Із потребами часу діяли різні комітети: "Допомога голодуючим в Україні" (1933), "Мати і дитина" (У повоєнному часі Другої світової війни), "Допомога скиталцям" -- українським поселенцям у Бразілії, Арґентині, Параґваю, Польщі, Юґославії та ін. Безперервно діє допомога сиротам, "бабусям" інвалідам та людям старшого віку. Створено осередок листування (1973 р.). Від 1990 р. звернено особливу увагу на медичну та гуманітарну допомогу жертвам Чорнобиля, зокрема дітям. Зі співпраєю Союзу Українок в Україні оплачено кошти оздоровлення сотень дітей у санаторіях України. Наприкінці 1998 р. на руки Союзу Українок в Закарпатській області негайно вислано допомогу потерпілим від стихійного лиха -- повені: гроші на ліки, два контейнери одяу та побутових речей, покрито кошти в санаторіях на оздоровлення сотень дітей та грошеву допомогу найбільше потерпілим. СТИПЕНДІЙНА АКЦІЯ СУА Союз Українок Америки допомагав студіюючій молоді від часу свого заснування. У 1967 р. створено Стипендійну Акцію СУА метою якої є: допомогти українським учням та студентам у різних країнах їнього поселення стати свідомими громадянами, зберегти українську мову та українську етнічну ідентичність. Завдяки спонсорам понад вісімсот стипендіятів стали професіоналами у Бразілії, Арґентині, Польщі, Юґославії, США, Україні та інших країнах. Від 1989 р. обсяг праці поширено в Україні та інших східньоевропейських країнах. Для координації стипендійної допопмоги Україні, Союз Українок в Україні створив Комісію стипендій в яку входять представниці усіх областей України. Стипендійна Акція СУА допомагає стипендіятам у 17-ти країнах. Із фонду Єви Сташків призначаються стипендії членкам Союзу Українок Америки при схваленні Екзекутивою СУА. За безперервну діяльність та великі успіхи, на VII Світовому Конґресі Українців у 1998 р. Стипендійна Акція СУА одержала найвище відзначення – медаль "Св. Володимира Великого". Стипендійна Акція СУА -- це найбільше розвинена допомогова сітка в українській діяспорі, а тепер і в Україні, яка втішається підтримкою членства СУА та українського громадянства в США, Канаді та Австралії. ФОНД ім. ЛЕСІ ТА ПЕТРА КОВАЛЕВИХ Почавши з 1967 р. за бажанням меценатів, щороку проводиться конкурс та призначаються нагороди за літературні та історичні праці з українською тематикою. За останні три роки лавреатами конкурсу були автори з України. Фондом адмініструє Екзекутива СУА, а конкурс проводить заступниця голови для справ культури разом із жюрі. Під наглядом виховної референтури діють світлички та захоронки в різних містах США. Видано підручникаи, співаник і касети та книжечки з українськими піснями й казаками для малят. У 1994 році проведено міжнародний конкурс для дітей і молоді під загловком "Рік Родини -- 1994", а у 1998 р. завершено другий конкурс "Природа і ми". СУА видав збірники есеїв та малюнків конкурсів у яких були пміщені імена всіх учасників. Союз Українок Америки зробив великий вклад у суспільне життя української громади в США. У 1932 р. скликав перший Жіночой Конґрес в Америці; 1949 р. став співзасновником Українського Конґресового Комітету і був його членом до 1983 р. 1976 р. Союз Українок Америки заснував Український Музей в Нью-Йорку та примістив його у своєму приміщені при 2-ій Авеню ч. 203. Уже в 1926 р. СУА влаштував виставки українського народного мистецтва. Успіх виставок спонукав Управу д набуття у 1933 р. збірки народного і прикладного мистецтва. У жовтні 1976 р. використано етнографічну збірку (800 експонатів) СУА для початкових виставок УМ в Нью-Йорку. У Музеї засновано образотворчий та історичний відділи. Завдяки ініціятиві і матеріяльному вкладі членства СУА, Український Музей в Нью-Йорку став установою, яка є джерелом інформації про українську історію, культуру і мистецтво у міжнародній столиці.
Конвенція СУА -- це найвище законодавче тіло СУА, яке дотримується Статуту СУА та парляментарних засад поступування Г.М. Роберта. Як і попередньо, так і на XXV Конвенції СУА, усі референтури будуть мати свої сесії, звітування та рекомендації для продовження діяльности. Будуть прийняті рекомендації та резольції, пройдуть вибори нової Управи СУА на трирічну каденцію. Членки Головної Управи та все членство працюють безкорисливо -- на добровільній засаді. Це зміцнює Союз Українок Америки, бо діють із великим прееконанням, для добра організації та української спільноти у діяспорі та Україні. |
