FOURTH ANNUAL CHORNOBYL FUNDRAISER AT THE UNITED NATIONS
The Chornobyl Fund Raiser Bazaar was created in commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, by then
ambassador's wife Luda Zlenk and Marta Kokolskyj. The event has continued to grow and was
organized not only to serve as a fund raiser, but also for world awareness of the continued impact of
Chernobyl. Key organizers of the bazaar's planning committee are Marta
Kokolskyj, Irene Steciw, Nadia Shmigel and Anna Boyko.
The money will be used to purchase spare parts for medical equipment
used in the children's hospitals for Chernoyl victims.

(NEW YORK -- April 26) The Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations sponsored a fundraising bazaar for the victims of Chornobyl on the 13th anniversary of the disaster. The Belarus and Russian missions also participated in the event which was organized in part by Iryna Yel'chenko, wife of Ukrainian UN Ambassador Volodymyr Yel'chenko. Local Ukrainian diasporans helped the Mission and Ukrainian Consulate staff with preparations and manning the bazaar tables.

The bazaar took place in the lobby of the United Nations Secretariat building, the 39-story structure located on the grounds of the UN complex overlooking the East River. As UN diplomats and staff members made their way to and from lunch, they stopped by the tables to browse and make purchases from among the hand-made crafts and other items. Food was the hot item that day (little wonder!), as the lunch crowd selected from varennyky or the many tasty baked goods that were offered. A most special treat for all was the musical entertainment provided by the bandura ensemble "Vyshyvanka", directed by Alla Kutsevych. The well-rounded cultural experience for visitors was capped by a feast for eyes with the ensemble dressed in traditional costumes representing several regions from Ukraine.
