"CHERES: simply the best purveyor of authentic Ukrainian music in the United States today."
-- Joseph Hickerson, former Head, Archive of Folk Culture, Library of Congress.
"Currently, CHERES is the premier Ukrainian acoustic folk ensemble in the US."
-- Michal Shapiro, Producer, Ellipsis Arts...
CHERES ensemble was formed in Kyiv in 1990 by Andriy Milavsky from among the
students of Kyiv State Conservatory who mostly hailed from Western
Ukraine. The instrumental arsenal is comprised of wooden flutes, double flute, pan flute,
trembita (12-foot long shepherd's pipe), ocarina, hammered dulcimer (cymbalom), violins,
double-headed drum, mountain harp, double bass, and vocals. The band performs attired in
authentic Ukrainian costumes.
The name "CHERES" refers to the armored belt which is worn by shepherds
and travelers in the Carpathian Mountains of Western Ukraine.
