For Immediate ReleaseThe Ukrainian Institute of America, Inc., housed in a turn-of-the-century landmark mansion at 2 East 79th Street (corner of 5th Avenue), presents an exhibition of the art of the Ukrainian Easter Egg (Pysanka) on Wednesday, March 31st, 1999 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.
The art of the pysanka (from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, to write), dates back to pagan times, around 4,000 B.C., and the symbols on the colorfully decorated eggs were chosen for sun worship ceremonies. After the acceptance of Christianity in 988, the symbols on the eggs were adapted to represent Easter and Christ’s Resurrection.
