On February 19 and 20, despite the inclement weather, a capacity crowd marked the opening of the Daria Hoydysh Endowment for the Arts at the Ukrainian Institute with an exhibit of paintings, sculptures and a stimulating concert. Established recently by the Ukrainian Institute of America, the Endowment will promote and sponsor art, cultural and educational programs.
The late Daria Hoydysh was the Art Director at the Institute from 1991 to 1996. During this time she was a sponsor and curator of art exhibits featuring works by Archer-Muchin, Barabakh, Dekermendazi, Diadynuik, Dubovnyk, Ellis, Farion, Gallo, Gerulak, Hnizdovsky, Hordynsky, Hutsaliuk, Narozniak, Perepelitsa, Prokopiv, Pylypiuk, Olenska-Petryshyn, Saj-Shuhan, Sochynsky Stratilat and Tifft.
Daria Hoydysh was also one of the people instrumental in establishing the "Music at the Institute" program and worked diligently for the success of this undertaking. She was a lifetime member of the UIA and a past member of its Board of Directors.
The opening reception (February 19) was a well-organized, elegantly presented, catered affair, sponsored by Dr. Walter Hoydysh, Daria Hoydysh's husband. Following the reception , a film "Eternal Memory" directed by David Pultz and narrated by Meryl Streep was presented by George Boychuk, depicting purges and terror in Ukraine during the 1930s and 1940s --- a heartrending documentary.
On Saturday, February 20, a special concert was held in memory of Daria Hoydysh. Performing at the concert was pianist Mykola Suk whose works by Beethoven, Bartok, Lysenko and Liszt were superbly executed, moving the capacity audience to call for several encores.
Mr. Suk is the winner of the First Prize and Gold Medal at the 1971 International Liszt-Bartok Competition in Budapest and was highly acclaimed as both solist and chamber musician throughout the former Soviet Union, Australia, Europe, Middle East, Asia and North America. He studied at the Kyiv special Music School and at the Moscow Conservatory with Lev Vlasenko. Mr. Suk now lives in New York City with his lovely and dedicated wife Valida where he is the Artistic Director of the "Music at the Institute" concert series and a member of the faculty of Columbia University.
