Chervona Kalyna

... After The Ball

NEW JERSEY - On February 13, 1999, over 950 people attended the Chervona Kalyna Debutante Ball at the Marriott at Glenpointe in New Jersey. Over half of the guests were young Ukrainians who traveled from across the United States to meet family and friends at this annual event.

The tradition of the Chervona Kalyna Ball originated in Lviv, Ukraine in the 1920's, was interrupted during World War II, and then was re-established officially in New York City in 1959.

The Debutantes
Larissa Bohdanowycz, Katrina Adrianna Durbak, Kvitoslava Gorbaliuk, Oksana Irena Huk, Laryssa Anastasia Huryn, Odarka Koshariuk, Natalia Teodora Krawciw, Katria Natalia Kuzmowycz, Oksana Tatiana Polowczak, Victoria Melania Rakowsky, Xenia Rybak, Ustya Zorianna Tarnawsky

At this year's event, 12 Ukrainian debutantes from Alabama, Rhode Island, Virginia as well as the tri-state metropolitan New York area, were presented to Ukrainian society by Orest and Marta Kebalo. The beautifully choreographed presentation dance was arranged by Ms. Ania Bohachevsky Lonkevych. Ms. Olga Stawnychy was the coordinator of the debutante program.

Dr. and Olya Stawnychy

The chairman of the ball, Dr. Yaroslaw Stawnychy, greeted the many guests and introduced some of the distinguished guests at the ball. In attendance among the diplomats from Ukraine were Mr. Anton Buteiko, Ambassador from Ukraine to the U.S., Mr. Volodymyr Yel'chenko, Ambassador to the United Nations and Consul General in New York, Mr. Yuri Bohaievsky with their wives.

Both young and old danced to the music of Tempo and Luna and lingered long past the music ended. It seems no one wanted the evening to end. As the last Chervona Kalyna before the year 2000, it was a great success! We are looking forward to an even greater end-of-the-century ball next year.

The hard-working 1999 Committee members whose efforts made this event a success included:
Yaroslaw Stawnychy, chairman
Ihor Sochan, administration
Bohdan Tytla, press and tableau
Markian Tytla, flowers
Olya Stawnychy, debutante coordinator
Marko Dulyn
Marko Lysynetsky
Members of 23-rd Kurin' USP

A note to prospective debutante candidates in the year 2000: In order to discuss your eligibility, you must get in touch Olya Stawnychy at 201-933-7558 in the fall of 1999 (deadline: before December 15, 1999).
