The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is pleased to present But Yet the Body is His Book, a group show of paintings, sculpture and photography co-curated by Joanne Berens and Robert Mitchell tracing the legacy of Chicago sculptor Herbert George through the art of twelve of his students. On view will be work by Herbert George and former students Don Asher, Christine Boos, Elizabeth Carson Manley, Marc Fischer, Yvette Kaiser Smith, Matthew Kolodziej, Jennifer Krauss, Darlene Kryza, Robert Mitchell, John Santoro, Deb Vandenbroucke, and Duncan Webb.
The title of this exhibit is from a line in John Donne's poem "The Ecstasy," which describes how the human body gives expression to metaphysical ideas. Just as ideas and emotions are conveyed through such bodily expressions as our gestures and voices, the works on view are the bodily book of the artists' ideas. This fusion of materials and concept is a consistent element present in this exhibit. Herbert George has long been respected as an educator for his ability to teach artists to express their ideas and motives through their artistic media.
Herbert George selected artists for this exhibit whose periods of study span his decade long teaching career at the University of Chicago. John Santoro and George both came to the University in 1986, whereas Darlene Kryza and Yvette Kaiser Smith received their Master of Fine Arts degrees in 1994. George's students, now in the beginning to middle stages of their professional careers, in some cases educators themselves, currently exhibit their work locally and nationally.
The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA), a not for profit arts organization, was founded in 1971. For over 25 years UIMA has served the local community and greater Chicago area with a program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and multi-disciplinary events. The programs presented by UIMA are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
