The spell of spring with its promise of renewal and rebirth ushers in the season for Easter traditions and the pysanky, the unique Ukrainian Easter eggs known the world over for their intricate, colorful designs. Today and tomorrow, March 29 and 30, The Ukrainian Museum is offering free admission to its exhibition PYSANKA: The Ukrainian Easter Egg. In addition to the visual feast in the gallery, Slavko Nowytski's award-winning documentary film PYSANKA (15 min.) is being shown continuously for visitors.

Drawn from the Museum's extensive folk arts collection, the nearly 300 eggs on display are decorated in a variety of regional styles, rich colors, and assorted motifs. The hand-crafted pysanky are made using raw eggs, dyes, and beeswax in a wax-resist technique, similar to the batik method used on cloth. The process results in colorful eggs ornamented with an array of detailed geometric, floral, and faunistic symbols. While you're at the Museum, don't miss the map of Ukraine with its regional display of pysanka styles.

The art of creating Ukrainian pysanky (from the word pysaty – to write) has been handed down from generation to generation, and Ukrainian immigrants have brought their cultural traditions to this country. If you haven't made your own pysanka for this Easter, don't despair! The Museum's gift shop offers a spectacular array of decorated eggs imported from Ukraine, as well as other specialty items for the holiday, such as kits to make pysanky at home with the family.
