Jaroslav K. Turkalo M.D.
born 21 June 1924, Kyiv, Ukraine

Jaroslav K. Turkalo M.D., age 84, beloved husband of Lada Turkalo, married in 1952, died Friday, April 24, 2009.

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, he survived communist oppression and fled to Western Europe during WWII. He graduated from Louvain Medical School in Belgium in 1950 and immigrated to the USA in 1951, doing his internship at Bayonne Hospital in New Jersey and his residency in General Surgery at Polyclinic Hospital in New York. He then served in the Navy as a surgeon with the rank of Lieutenant during the Korean War. Dr. Turkalo then did residencies in General and Thoracic Surgery in the Albany VA Hospital, Castle Point Hospital, NY, VA Hospital, Brooklyn, NY and Doctors Hospital, NY. He went into private practice in New Haven in 1962 where he was affiliated with St. Raphael Hospital. Dr. Turkalo was also a member of the National Guard from 1977 - 1990, holding the rank of Lt. Colonel.

He was the author of History of Byzantine Empire (Ecumenical Councils) 325-787 AD. His life's work was the 40 years he spent writing The Ukrainian Textbook of Surgery in 10 volumes in both Ukrainian and English. His family will strive to complete and publish this work for him.

A truly remarkable man, his research led him to travel the world extensively. He was fluent in six languages. He was an active member of the Ukrainian Congress Committee and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted children, one son, Marko Turkalo and his wife, Carolynn of New Jersey, one daughter, Tasia Turkalo of Orange and two grand daughters, Jennifer and Natalie Turkalo.
