New reference book about Ukrainians in America
Did you know that 50's actor Nick Adams (nee Mykola Adamchak) of "The Rebel" fame was of Lemko-Ukrainian heritage? How about that actress Natalie Wood's surname was originally Horodenko? Well, maybe you (or your parents) knew those two, but chances are that you had no idea that the little guy inside that famous E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982, suit was Petrus' Bilon (a.k.a., Patrick Bilon), a Ukrainian-American little person hailing from Youngstown, Ohio.
These and other fascinating facts about Ukrainian-Americans can be found in the Encyclopedia of the Ukrainian Diaspora, Volume 1, United States of America (A-K), published by the Shevchenko Scientific Society, Inc., New York-Chicago, 2009. Just released, the book is 450 pages long, contains 1942 entries, and 695 photographs (mostly b&w, color inserts in center).
The references to Hollywood figures are only a few in comparison to the many people and institutions described in this jam-packed volume. It's a veritable Who's Ever Been Who and What's What among Ukrainians in the U.S.: doctors, government reps, churches, social organizations, even the Ukrainian neighborhoods scattered around the country.
One drawback is that it's published only in Ukrainian, unless, of course, you read Ukrainian in which case it may be a bonus. According to the Shevchenko Scientific Society, due to the complexities of compiling the entries, some facts may have been omitted. They ask that any errors or omissions be reported to their offices, so that the errata can be addressed in the upcoming volumes L-S and T-Ya.
This volume is on sale for $40 ($32 for Society members) plus $6 postage to addresses within the United States.
