New York For the first time in its history, New York City is observing Ukrainian American Heritage Days, which started on September 1st and end on the 11th. A proclamation to this effect was issued by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in recognition of the contributions made by Ukrainian American immigrants, and as a celebration of the strides towards democracy made in Ukraine during and since the Orange Revolution. The mayoral declaration was obtained on the initiative of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA.org) and the Ukrainian American Coordinating Committee (UACC).
A similar proclamation is expected to be issued by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz this Wednesday. See the Brama calendar for more information about Ukrainian American Heritage Days.
Office of the Mayor
CITY OF NEW YORK
ON AUGUST 24, 1991, UKRAINE DECLARED ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM RUSSIA. THE
ENSUING YEARS HAVE BEEN A TIME OF BOTH TROUBLES AND TRIUMPHS, BUT LAST
AUTUMN'S "ORANGE REVOLUTION," WHICH SAW THE ELECTION OF PRESIDENT VIKTOR
YUSHCHENKO, WAS A STIRRING REMINDER THAT THE IDEALISM AND INTEGRITY THAT
INSPIRED UKRAINE'S INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT REMAINS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED
NEW YORK CITY JOINS ITS MANY UKRAINIAN RESIDENTS IN THIS IMPORTANT
CELEBRATION OF SOVEREIGNTY. UKRAINIANS BEGAN ARRIVING IN NEW YORK IN THE
LATE 1870S BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL THE COMPLETION IN 1905 OF ST. GEORGE'S UKRAINIAN
CATHOLIC CHURCH THAT A TRUE COMMUNITY TOOK SHAPE. A STRONG WORK ETHIC AND
DEVOTION TO FAMILY FUELED THE UKRAINIAN COMMUNITY'S GREAT SUCCESS HERE, AND
IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE UKRAINIAN NEW YORKERS WERE DISTINGUISHING THEMSELVES
IN BUSINESS, GOVERNMENT, AND THE ARTS.
THE LEGACY OF FORTITUDE AND VALOR ESTABLISHED BY THOSE WHO FOUNDED AN
INDEPENDENT UKRAINE IS ALIVE AND WELL TODAY AMONG BOTH UKRAINIANS AND
UKRAINIAN AMERICANS. WE TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CELEBRATE UKRAINE'S
HISTORICAL LEGACY, CONTEMPORARY VITALITY, AND PROMISING FUTURE.
NOW THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK, IN RECOGNITION OF
THIS IMPORTANT EVENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SEPTEMBER 1-11, 2005 IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK AS
"UKRAINIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE DAYS"
IN WITNESS WHEREOF I HAVE HEREUNTO
SET MY HAND AND CAUSED THE SEAL OF
THE CITY OF NEW YORK TO BE AFFIXED.
MICHAEL R. BLOOMBEBG
