New York For the first time in its history, New York City is observing Ukrainian American Heritage Days, which started on September 1st and end on the 11th. A proclamation to this effect was issued by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in recognition of the contributions made by Ukrainian American immigrants, and as a celebration of the strides towards democracy made in Ukraine during and since the Orange Revolution. The mayoral declaration was obtained on the initiative of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA.org) and the Ukrainian American Coordinating Committee (UACC).
A similar proclamation is expected to be issued by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz this Wednesday. See the Brama calendar for more information about Ukrainian American Heritage Days.
