DECLARATION Of Parliamentary Group of the CDPP

Regarding Presidential elections in Ukraine

The Parliamentary Group of the Christian Democratic People’s Party of Moldova is deeply concerned with the critical situation in Ukraine that occurred as the result of unfair and unfree presidential elections. Massive frauds and irregularities were committed by the authorities and allies of Mr. Kuchma and Mr. Yanukovych which in turn made supporters of the opposition take their discontent into the streets. Mr. Viktor Yushchenko was stripped of the clear victory that he obtained in the elections. Numerous frauds were committed during the second round of these elections and hence, the OSCE, the United States of America, the European Union, the Council of Europe and the NATO have strongly criticized the Ukrainian authorities. There is a possibility of international sanctions to be applied against Ukraine and even a risk of international isolation; this in turn could directly influence national interests of the Republic of Moldova.

The Parliamentary Group of the Christian Democratic People’s Party of Moldova makes hereby an appeal to the current government in Kiev to restrain from using force against peaceful manifestations and to accept the transfer of power towards legally elected President Mr. Viktor Yushchenko.

It is important to point out that a process of settlement of a crucial political problem that our country faces – the problem of Transnistria – and reestablishment of territorial unity of the Republic of Moldova mostly depends on Ukraine’s position on this issue. Unfortunately, during the last decade, when Ukraine has been given the status of mediator of the Transnistrian conflict, the Republic of Moldova has not enjoyed a productive and loyal cooperation with Kiev. All initiatives controlling customs and border control on our Eastern border- behind the zone controlled by separatists have been ignored by the Ukrainian leadership. In this respect, the Tiraspol criminal regime committed numerous frauds in favor of Mr. Victor Yanukovych. Shortly after the closure of the voting stations, the separatist leadership was eager to send its congratulations to the current Prime Minister. It is quite obvious that the change in the leadership in Kiev would allow through constructive collaboration between our countries’ authorities a positive settlement of the Transnistrean crisis.

The Parliamentary Group of the Christian Democratic People’s Party expresses its hopes that this major political crisis in Ukraine will be shortly and successfully solved. We are confident that legitimacy, democracy and the will of the Ukrainian people, expressed in the Presidential elections, will triumph.

We would like to convey to the Ukrainian democratic forces our solidarity and wish them full success in their efforts in affirming people’s sovereignty and maintaining democratic achievements of their country.
