Wednesday evening September 22nd the U.S. House of Representatives set aside time for Special Order Speeches. These are presentations by U.S. Representatives for specified durations at specified times on subjects of their own choosing, which are outside the consideration of the House's legislative business.
Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) Representative of the 9th District of Ohio was alloted 5 minutes at approximately 8:30pm EDT. Her subject was the recent alleged poisoning of Viktor Yuschenko - Ukraine's leading opposition candidate in the 2004 Presidential Election which will be held Sunday October 31st.
After some initial remarks, over the course of the balance of her alloted time she read excerpts from Yushchenko's recent speech to the Verkhovna Rada. Referencing Ukraine's "political kitchen" as the cause of the poisoning, Viktor Yushchenko (VY), as read by Marcy Kaptur (MK), sought to rally the Rada's deputies.
First pointing to previous victims - including Heorhiy Gongadze and Vyacheslav Chornovil - VY/MK squarely placed the guilt for their deaths onto Ukraine's "Political Kitchen". His own life was spared by " ... the wrong dose, the wrong time and my angel's awake; that is what helped me return to the living."
VY/MK concluded by saying that there is a lesson here - show a little heroism today and you will then see Ukraine free and democratic and prosperous. "Don't forget this lesson or this lesson will get you."
