Canadian Ukrainians want to know candidates' positions on key issues
Winnipeg, Manitoba (June 9, 2004) - The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) has issued a
questionnaire to four political parties (Liberal, Conservative, NDP and Bloc) and to the candidates in an
attempt to inform Canadians of their positions on several key issues. Candidates have been asked to
respond by June 15, 2004 and the responses will be published and circulated before the forthcoming
federal election both on the web and in the press. Should candidates elect not to respond, the UCC will
record that as an expression of "No Interest."
The candidates are being asked their position on the following key issues:
1. Multiculturalism – I support sustainable funding for the enhancement of Canadian multicultural communities based on the principles of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. Yes/No
2. Immigration to Canada - I support strengthening Canada’s immigration policy by enhancing family reunification, community-based settlement programs, nominee programs and recognition of foreign credentials. Yes/No
3. Citizenship - I support the principle that Canadian citizenship is irrevocable after a reasonable period of time from when it was acquired. Yes/No
4. Internment of Ukrainians – I support redress to the Ukrainian Canadian community for the injustices committed to Ukrainians and other Europeans during Canada's first national internment operations of 1914-20. Yes/No
5. Canada-Ukraine relations – I support strengthening Canada's relationship and assistance to Ukraine in furthering democratic and economic reforms and integration with NATO, EU, WTO and Western democracies. Yes/No
