New Primate for the Orthodox Church of Canada, Ukrainian Autocephalous Mission Archeparchy
Albertan & Edmontonian, Most Rev. Archbishop +Joseph Royer (48) has been
elected by the Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church of Canada (Ukrainian
Autocephalous Mission Archeparchy) to succeed the present Primate of the
jurisdiction, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Archbishop +Yaroslaw Sereda, who
is retiring due to ill health. Archbishop +Joseph will be the youngest
Primate ever elected to head this rapidly growing, Mission oriented Church
which has Parishes, Missions & Monasteries in Canada, the USA, & Oceania.
The Orthodox Church of Canada is affiliated - through the Standing Episcopal
Conference of Orthodox Bishops established in 1951 - with many other
Orthodox Church jurisdictions throughout North & South America, the
Philippines and Europe. The OCC-UAMA is part of the historical Ukrainian
Autocephalous Orthodox Church which established its' rightful place in
Orthodoxy in North America in 1921.
Primate-Elect Archbishop +Joseph will have his election confirmed during the
Orthodox Church of Canada Sobor to be held in Edmonton from July 2-4, 2004.
The Orthodox Church of Canada is a "council-ruled" jurisdiction and as such
meets regularly to make decisions for the Church through the participation
of all Hierarchs, Clergy and the faithful. The official elevation of
Archbishop +Joseph as Metropolitan and his installation as the Primate of
the OCC-UAMA will take place at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday,
July 4, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. At All Saints Orthodox Cathedral in Edmonton,
Alberta.
