    Press Release

The world’s oldest ocean rower Ukrainian Pavel Rezvoy (65) is approaching the target of his epic voyage - Santiago de Cuba

    © OCEANROWING.COM

In January 20th 2004 Pavel left La Gomera ( Canary Islands ) onboard his ocean rowboat Marion-Lviv to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic in the longest of rowing regattas - ORSARR 2004. 61 days later he put his boat to the pontoon pier of Port St Charles in Barbados. Ever the passionate adventurer, he set his next goal - CUBA ! The distance of 1638 miles (2636 km) (1423 nautical miles)...

The world’s oldest ocean rower Ukrainian Pavel Rezvoy (65) in his 7-meter-long ocean rowboat "Marion-Lviv" is approaching the target of his epic voyage - Santiago de Cuba. He was expected to land Saturday morning, but encountered storm fronts, currents and head winds, that slowed his progress. On the morning of June 5th he was still 60 miles south from the coast.

Pavel Rezvoy left La Gomera (Canary Islands) headed to Barbados on January 20th as entrant in the Transatlantic Rowing Regatta ( www.oceanregatta.com) , organized by the Ocean Rowing Society, based in London ( www.oceanrowing.com) .

He has rowed 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean single-handed and unassisted, using oars as the only means of propulsion, in 61 days. But after successful arrival to Barbados he didn’t want to stop the adventure and undertook the path nobody had rowed before - rowing northwest, across the Caribbean Sea to reach “the dream of his youth” - Cuba. In 3 weeks after departure from Barbados Pavel Rezvoy has covered 1164 miles (1874 km) (1015 n/miles).

When being asked what had driven him to undertake such a challenge, geologist and now a pensioner Pavel said: "I have caught insuperable desire to set out on the ocean – until now, five sixths of the globe has been unknown to me. It's time. It's time to set sail (oars) … while I still can."

Pavel is just another example that the term "while I still can" is stretching these days. Mexican Ramon Blanco, recently became the oldest to summit the Seven Summits at age 70. The oldest Himalayan 8000+ climber is a 70+ Japanese female. British Simon Murray just became the oldest person to ski to the South Pole at the age of 63 and last year Japanese Yuichiro Miura became the oldest person to summit Everest at the age of 70.
