New York - Seven paintings that had been in the private collection of the Skoropadsky family (Ukrainian nobility) were given to the Hetman Museum in Kyiv during an official ceremony that took place on Friday March 12 in the Consulate of Ukraine in New York.
The portrait paintings of Ukrainian Hetmans and women of the Hetmanate from the 17th and 18th centuries are the work of artist Olha Morvinova. The collection, which had been commissioned by Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky (1873-1945), is a set of copies produced after the originals had been destroyed during the revolution.
Since 1980, the canvases have been in the care of the Lypynsky East European Research Institute. The sole legal owner of the collection, Olena Ott-Skoropadsky, daughter Hetman Skoropadsky, expressed her wish to give the paintings to Ukraine.
On Friday in the presence of a number of representatives of the Ukrainian community and media companies in New York, J.Pelensky, Director of the Institute, together with the Consul General of Ukraine S.Pohoreltsev signed the act by which ownership of these works of art was formally transferred to Ukraine. Also present at the signing was M.Kravets from the Ukrainian airline Aerosvit, which will transport the valuable collection to Kyiv. Representatives of Ukrainian community organizations and media companies witnessed this auspicious occasion.
