Ukrainian-born artists featured in Southern California Exhibition and Gallery
by Max Pyziur
Recently, Sparrow Fine Art, a southern California gallery based north of San Diego, has begun featuring Ukrainian-born artists in its offerings as part of a larger group of Soviet-era productions. In addition, many of the works of these artists were recently featured in an exhibition, which ran from November 15th 2003 through January 15th 2004 at the Barracks Gallery at the Mission San Juan Capistrano.
The theme of the exhibition/the collection is "Soviet Period Russian Impressionism". However, as one anonymous reviewer noted this is an erroneous labelling. Many of the pieces are done from nature and do have some stylistic affinity to the loose and airy impressionist technique. However, the methods of the artists, as the reviewer points out, are more due to the educational methods of Soviet academies rather than direct influence of artists such as Monet or Degas.
Moreover, since the collection includes Ukrainians and possibly artists of other ethnicities that were
once part of the Soviet Union, calling it "Russian" impressionism is that much more inappropriate.
Nevertheless, the exhibition and the gallery do offer a good direct presentation of these works.
These artists are relatively unknown; neither the Encyclopedia of Ukraine nor the Ykrayins'ka Radians'ka Entsklopediya Slovnyk nor a 1992 extensive directory of Ukrainian artists have anything on these particular individuals. Here are some brief bios obtained at the Mission San Juan Capistrano exhibition:
