Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox Hierarchs Fraternal Encounter II
Gathered by the Grace of the All-Holy Spirit, the Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic hierarchs of the Northern Hemisphere met in St Petersburg, FL on 6-7 February 2004, for their second Fraternal Encounter. Notable from the very beginning was the strong spirit of fraternity, which marked their first Encounter in July 2003, for which the participants rendered thanksgiving to the Giver of every good and perfect gift.
Participating in this second Encounter, which was hosted by His Grace Bishop Robert Moskal, were the following: Ukrainian Catholic Church of the USA and Canada - His Grace Stefan Soroka - Metropolitan, Archeparchy of Philadelphia PA; His Grace Basil Losten, Bishop of the Eparchy of Stamford, CT; His Grace Robert Moskal, Eparchy of St Josaphat, Parma, OH; His Grace Cornelious Pasichny, OSBM, Bishop Emeritus of Toronto and Eastern Canada; His Grace Severian Yakymyshyn, OSBM, Eparchy of Westminster, British Columbia, Canada; His Grace Richard Seminak, Bishop of the Eparchy of St. Nicholas, Chicago, IL and His Grace David Motiuk, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Participating from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA: His Beatitude Constantine, Primate and Metropolitan of the Central Eparchy, Parma, OH; His Eminence Antony, Consistory President and Archbishop of the Eastern Eparchy, South Bound Brook, NJ; and His Eminence Vsevolod, Archbishop of the Western Eparchy, Chicago, IL. All the hierarchs expressed their regret that several hierarchs were unable to be present for this Encounter and in particular sent their best wishes to Metropolitan Wasyly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada and Metropolitan Michael Bzdel of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada, who are experiencing health problems at the present time.
The hierarchs' first act during the Encounter was the issuance of a message to the faithful of the two churches, which is intended to serve as a conclusion to the year long commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the genocidal famine created by Josef Stalin against the Ukrainian nation in 1932-33. After outlining the history of one of the worst holocausts of the bloody 20th century, one which took the lives of over ten million innocent Ukrainian men, women and children simply because they strove to retain their individual human rights in the face of man's inhumanity to man, the hierarchs called upon the government of Ukraine, the Churches of Ukraine and all Ukrainians both in Ukraine and beyond her borders, "to work hand in hand to confirm the sanctity and dignity of life and the right of free people to live in peace and in justice, without fear." The hierarchs scheduled a special memorial service, inviting the faithful of the local Orthodox and Catholic parishes to pray with them for the victims of the famine. They designated St. Thomas Sunday/Providna Nedilia - 18 April 2004 - as a day of prayer and commemoration and encourage Ukrainians around the world to each light a candle on that day so that at least 10 million candles are lit around the world, which will illumine the memory of the 10 million children of God who perished during the most sorrowful years of Ukraine's history. Further, the hierarchs reviewed the recent study presented by the Catholic/Orthodox Dialogue concerning the history and development of the "Filioque" ("and the Son") clause added by some in the Western Church to the Nicene Creed of Faith, stating that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father "and the Son". They affirmed that the Creed as proclaimed by the Second Ecumenical Council in Nicea reflects the true dogmatic understanding of the Church concerning the procession of the Holy Spirit. The Bishops welcome and support this study, noting the omission of the Filioque clause in the liturgical services of most Ukrainian Catholic Eparchies and pray that the findings will eventually impact upon the liturgical traditions of all branches of Christianity.
Ever concerned with the unity of the Faith, the hierarchs will appoint a special commission to develop a proposal for a week of prayer for Christian unity, which will call upon Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic parishes in local communities around the world to join in prayer in each other's churches as evidence of their sincerity when they pray during each Divine Liturgy: "For the peace of the whole world, for the good estate of the Holy Churches of God and for the unity of them all, let us pray to the Lord".
The bishops, considering the benefit for clergy of both Churches to nurture the spirit of fraternity begun among themselves, a spirit, which when developed, edifies and contributes to understanding and sensitivity, have set into motion plans to hold a joint conference of all the clergy of their respective Eparchies in the year 2005. This conference, to be spiritual and educational in nature, will serve to enlighten the clergy of both churches concerning those things held in common, encouraging open discussion and acceptance of one another in a setting free of the history of judgment and condemnation, which, in the past, may very well have injured the faithful entrusted to their spiritual care.
In the framework of open discussion and acceptance of one another, the hierarchs also considered the recent decision of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ukraine to locate its spiritual center in the capital city of the nation, Kyiv. They stand firmly on the foundation of freedom of religion, which is often taken for granted in our Western society, where all Churches have equal rights to conduct their ministry in the manner appropriate to their particular beliefs and needs. The hierarchs confirm their belief that these rights must prevail in an independent and free Ukraine, whose constitution also guarantees freedom of religion. They urge the faithful of their traditional ecclesiastical bodies of Ukraine to act in the Love of Christ rather than in fear of or in judgment of one another. There is a nation to build and Christ's Church must be the moral conscience of that building process.
The bishops, having reflected on the culture of immorality, which directly undermines the sacredness of the family - the foundation of society - affirm that the Holy Mystery of Marriage, which Christ manifested as an honorable estate by His presence at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, a union which manifests the relationship between Christ and His Church and can exist only between a male and female. They further affirm the sacredness and dignity of life from conception to natural death, consider those who approve of or cooperate in abortions as unworthy of receiving the Holy Eucharist. The hierarchs condemn those who conduct the prostitution of children and young adults throughout the world.
The hierarchs discussed the political life of Ukraine after 12 years of independence and offer their prayers that the Holy Spirit will guide both political and ecclesiastical leaders there during what appears to be a looming constitutional crisis over such issues as the election of the nation's President. Finally, the hierarchs considered current developments in the Ukrainian communities of the Western Hemisphere in which they live, work and lead. They expressed concern about an apparent attitude of secularization of community life in recent years. The bishops affirm the extremely important nature of the Church's involvement in all aspects of community life and the absolute necessity of frequent consultation between community secular leaders and the hierarchs, where the support of the Church is expected or needed.
The Ukrainian hierarchs set the date of Fraternal Encounter III for 6-7 August 2004 at a location to be announced. They closed Encounter II in prayerful thanksgiving to Almighty God for the opportunity given to gather as brothers in the Lord and to establish a working relationship, which can only benefit the faithful flocks they lead.
On Saturday, 7 February, the hierarchs visited Holy Epiphany Ukrainian Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, FL to pray with hundreds of the faithful of both churches for the victims of the genocidal famine of 1932-33. Prior to the memorial service, His Beatitude Metropolitan Constantine and His Grace Metropolitan Stefan blessed a beautiful mosaic of the Baptism of our Lord in the River Jordan over the main entrance on the exterior of the church. These two hierarchs then read the message from the Encounter about the Famine to the faithful gathered.

Друга Братня Зустрiч Iєрархiв Українських Католицьких i Православних Церков
У днях 6 і 7 лютого 2004 р.Б. у м. Ст. Петербурзі на Флоридi, з ласки Всесвятого Духа, відбулася вже друга з черги братня зустріч ієрархів українських католицьких і православних Церков Північної Америки. Від самого початку на цій зустрічі, як і на першій, що відбулася в липні 2003 р., панував дух братерства, за що присутні молитовно дякували Подавцеві всього доброго і досконалого.
Господарем цих зборів був Преосвященний Владика Роберт Москаль, з єпархії св. Йосафата в Пармі, Огайо, а участь взяли єпископи УКЦеркви США і Канади: Митрополит Філадельфійської Архиєпархії Високопреосвящ. Стефан Сорока, єпископ Стeмфордської єпархії в шт. Коннектикат, Преовящ. Владика Василь Лостен, єпископ-емерит Торонта і Східної Канада, Преосвящ. Корнелій Пасічний, ЧСВВ, Преосвящ. єпископ Северіян Якимишин, ЧСВВ з Вестмінстерської єпархії у Брит. Кулумбії, Преосвящ. Ричард Семиняк, з єпархії св. Миколая в Чікаґо, шт. Ілліной і Преосвящ. Давид Мотюк, єпископ-вікарій з Вінніпеґської Архиєпархії у пров. Манітоба, в Канаді. З Української Православної Церкви в США присутні були: Блажен. Митрополит Константин, правлячий архиєрей Центральної єпархії, з Парми, шт. Огайо, Високопреосвящ. Архиєпископ Антоній, голова Консисторії і правлячий архиєрей Східної єпархії, С. Бавнд Бруку, шт. Н.Дж., і Високопреосвящ. Архиєпископ Всеволод з Чікаґо, шт. Ілліной, правлячий архиєрей Західної єпархії УПЦеркви в США. Всі присутні висловили жаль з приводу того, що декілька ієрархів не змогли прибути на зустріч, і послали вітання Митрополитові Василеві з УПЦеркви Канади та Митрополитові Михаїлові (Бзделю) з УКЦеркви в Канаді. Обидва Владики нездужають.
В першу чергу, учасники зустрічі видали вірним обох Церков послання, яке має бути підсумком цілорічного відзначення 70-ої річниці Голодомору 1932-33 р.р., створеного Йосифом Сталіним з наміром знищити український народ. Окресливши історію одного з найбільших голодо-морів цього кривавого ХХ-го століття, в якому загинуло більше, як 10 мільйонів українців - чоловіків, жінок і дітей - лише тому, що вони бажали зберегти свої індивідуальні людські права у час нелюдяности, учасники зустрічі закликали уряд України, її Церкви та українців в Україні і поза її межами перебуваючих, "працювати спільно, та закріпити святість і гідність людського життя та право вільних людей жити у спокої і справедливості та без страху". Ієрархи-учасники відслужили Панахиду та запросили вірних місцевих православних і католицьких церков помолитися разом з ними за спокій душ жертв Голодомору. Вони визначили Провідну неділю, 18 квітня 2004 р., Днем молитви і поми-нання та заохочували українців у всіх країнах засвітити в цей день по свічці, щоб світло принаймні 10 мільйонів свічок, засвічених по всьому світі, осяяло пам'ять десяти мільйонів дітей Божих, що загинули під час найскорботніших років історії України.
Далі ієрархи-учасники зустрічі розглянули недавній результат "Католицько-Православного діaлогу" щодо історії і постання "Filioque" ("і Сина"), що подекуди вживається в Західній Церкві в Нікейському Символі віри, яким твер-диться, що Святий Дух походить "від Отця і Сина". Вони погодились, що Символ Віри, укладений на Другому Вселенському Соборі в Нікеї, віддзеркалює правдиве доґматичне розуміння Церкви щодо походження Святого Духа. Владики вітають і підтримують працю вищезгаданого "Діaлогу" та стверджують, що названий додаток "і Сина" у Богослуженнях більшості українських католицьких єпархій випускається. Вони сподіваються, що вислід праці "Діалогу" матиме вплив на літургійні традиції усіх гілок християнства.
Турбуючись єдністю віри, владики погодились визначити спеціaльну комісію, яка виробила б проєкт "тижня молитви за християнську єдність", і тоді закликати вірних українських католицьких і православних парафій по всьому світі існуючих, молитися в храмах одні одних, як доказ щирости молитви, коли під час Святої Літургії священик виголошує: "За спокій світу, за добрий стан святих Божих Церков і за з'єднання всіх Господеві помолімось".
Владики вважають, що дух братерства, що панує між ними, який повчає і збільшує порозуміння і чутливість, буде корисним і для духовенства обох Церков. Тому вони запланували відбути у 2005 р. спільну конференцію духовенства їхніх єпархій. Ця конференція, що має бути по суті духовною і освітньою, роз'яснить священнослужителям обох Церков все, що між ними є спільне, та заохочуватиме до вільної дискусії, до сприйняття один одного та занехаяння колишніх засуджень і вироків, що в минулому могли бути лише на шкоду довіреним їхній духовній опіці вірним.
У рамках вільної дискусії і сприймання одні одних, владики обговорили недавнє рішення УКЦеркви в Україні мати свій духовний осередок в столиці України-Києві. Вони непохитно стоять на засаді свободи релігії, що на Заході вважається самозрозумілим, де всі Церкви мають однакові права провадити своє служіння відповідно до своїх особливих вірувань і потреб. Ієрархи підтверджують своє переконання, що згадані права повинні існувати у незалежній і вільній Україні, конституція якої теж запевняє свободу релігії. Вони закликають вірних традиційних Церков України жити у Христовій любові, а не в страху одні перед одними і взаємозасудженням. Держава є в процесі будування, і Христова Церква мусить бути моральною совістю того процесу.
Владики, обговоривши культ аморальності, що безпосередньо підриває святість родини, як основи суспільства, стверджують, що одруження Таїнством Шлюбу є почесним станом, що Христос підтвердив це Своєю присутністю на весільній гостині у Кані Ґалилейській. Це - поєднання, що віддзеркалює співвідносини поміж Христом і Його Церквою, може існувати лише поміж чоловіком і жінкою. Владики водночас підтвердили, що людське життя від хвилини зачаття аж до природної смерти, є святе. Вони вважають, що особи, які оправдують аборти чи сприяють їм, не гідні отримувати святе Причастя. Владики засуджують тих, що займаються проституцією - дітей і молодих осіб.
Учасники зустрічі обговорили політичне життя в Україні після 12 років незалежности. Вони будуть молитись, щоб Святий Дух керував і політичними, і церковними провідниками під час того, що виглядає як конституційна криза в справі виборів Президента держави. В кінці владики міркували над сучасними подіями в українських громадах Західної півкулі, в яких вони живуть, працюють і якими керують. Вони висловили стурбованість видимою секуляризацією громад в останніх роках. Владики ствердили важливість участи Церкви у всіх ділянках громадського життя і абсолютну потребу частих нарад поміж громадськими провідниками та ієрархами, коли очікується чи потребується підтримка Церкви.Наступна третя братня зустріч владик призначена на дні 6 і 7 серпня 2004 р., у ще не призначеному місці. Сучасну зустріч закінчено молитвою подяки Всевишньому за можливість зустрічатися, як брати у Господі та співпрацювати для добра довірених їхньому проводу вірних.В суботу, 7 лютого ієрархи відвідали українську католицьку церкву Святого Богоявлення у Ст. Петербурзі, щоб разом з сотнями вірних обох Церков помолитися за спокій душ жертв Голодомору 1932-33 р.р. Перед Панахидою Митрополити Константин і Стефан посвятили чудову мозаїку над головним входом до церкви, зображуючу Хрещення Господнє в річці Йордані. Потім владики зачитали текст послання ієрархів на тему Голодомору.
