Ukrainian Titans: Statlines for February 2 2004
by Max Pyziur
Pursuing an aggressive seven-game nine-day road trip the Los Angeles
Lakers landed in Indianapolis for an evening game against the Indiana
Pacers.
Having started their road trip on the previous day in Toronto against the
Raptors (a game they won narrowly 84-83) they started the game flat.
Adding
to this was a one game suspension of Shaquille O'Neal, their leading
scorer.
Though playing at home and having had a day off and minus Jermaine O'Neal
- one of
their star players, the Indiana Pacers also played without any spark
and suffered several serious defensive lapses.
Though the Lakers rallied twice to narrow the score in the end the Pacers
prevailed 85-72.
In spite of the loss Slava Medvedenko regained some of his luster which
had dulled in his previous three starts. For the evening he was 5 for 11
in field goals and 4 for 6 in free throws for 14 points (making him the
Lakers
high-scorer) and had 5 rebounds in 22 minutes of play.
Next game: 8pm ET, 5pm PT 2/4/2004 at Cleveland (KCAL-LA, FoxSports-Ohio,
ESPN)

In what seems to be typical for the Seattle Supersonics, they compete
against strong teams and lapse against weak ones. Hosting the
Chicago Bulls who currently are tied with the Orlando Magic for the
NBA's worst record, the Supersonics should have had an easy night.
Nevertheless, the score was tied at the half 54-54 showing that
the Bulls weren't going down without a fight and that the Sonics
were slipping on their defense.
However in the second half, the Sonics came out ready to compete and
at the final buzzer the score was in their favor 109-97.
Starting in his fourth consecutive game Vitaly Potapenko delivered his
standard trademark no-flash, strong defensive presence occasionally
contributing offensively. On 33 minutes of play he was 3 for 7
in field goals and 1 for 2 in free throws for 7 points, and had 5
rebounds.
Next game: Seattle travels to Sacramento this evening (2/3/2004 10pm ET,
7pm PT
on KONG 6/16, NBA TV
