Ukrainian Titans: Statlines for 1/31/2004 and 2/1/2004
- One Rising, One Meandering Star
by Max Pyziur
January 31st the Seattle Supersonics hosted the
Western Conference leading Sacramento Kings. The
conventional wisdom said that the win would go
easily in the Kings direction. It did but not without
a fight on the Supes part and game being decided
in the final minute of play where the Kings led
104-103. Several lapses afterwards left it at
110-103 at the final buzzer.
Nevertheless, Vitaly Potapenko in his new role as
starting center had a productive night along with
adding a bit of drama. He was 5 for 8 in
field goals and 2 for 2 in free throws for 12 points.
He also had 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block while
giving up 3 turnovers and 2 fouls on 30 minutes of play.
In the middle of the 3rd Qtr on the second of his two
steals Vitaly stole the ball from Kings Center Vlade Divac
and made a run solo run for the basket but fouled on his way
to make the layup by Brad Miller.
Next game - 2/2/2004: Seattle hosts the Chicago Bulls
at 10PM ET, 9PM CT, 7PM PT (FoxSports-Chicago, NBA
League Pass - Channel 8).

After a strong and productive late December and January
Los Angeles Lakers Slava Medvedenko's delivery has
slipped over the last three games. In January 30th's
game against the Minnesota Timberwolves as well as
the February 1st one hosted by the Toronto Raptors his
production has fallen back from 50-60% of shots attempted
to 25-35%. Admittedly, opposing teams are more aware of
Slava's offensive potential and guard him more aggressively.
However, his playing time has been limited because
of his increased fouls - in part due to his own lapses
as well as poor officiating.
Next game - 2/2/2004: the Los Angeles Lakers are hosted
by the Indian Pacers - current Eastern Conference leaders
at 7pm ET, 4pm PT (FoxSports-Midwest, KCAL-LA, NBA League
Pass-Channel 1).
