Getting Down in the Metro - Ukrainian sounds beneath the rues and boulevards of Paris

Subways throughout the world are not only transportation conduits
for denizens of larger cities, but they also play host to assorted artistic ventures.
Admittedly, many of the performers turn out to be talentless sorts attempting
to render yet another tired and tuneless version of an evergreen.
However, there are pleasant surprises on occasion - a performance artist
dressed and feigning the look of a famous statue; a somber
saxophone playing a soulful ballad; and in New York, a city-sanctioned
program called "Music Under the Streets" featuring lesser known
jazz musicians deserving wider recognition.
Throughout Europe organized groups of musicians travel from
city to city performing under license in the various tunnels
connecting their respective subway systems, collecting donations and
selling CD recordings. France's capital is one popular destination for such groups.
As the name indicates, Les Musiciens de Lviv
is a troupe from Lviv Ukraine which plays in Paris - its subways as
well as its cabarets. The group's performances are primarily Ukrainian music
while its CDs are recordings of a variety of East European traditional
music - Gypsy, Moldovan, Russian and Ukrainian.
Among the members of the group encountered at an interchange on Metro stop 'Chatelet' are:
Mykola Mazur - accordion, Vasyl Andrusiv - guitar, Volodymyr Chkoropata - flute, trumpet, tambourine, and Oleg Karaim - Bass.
