UCC disappointed with Pulitzer decision
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) expressed its disappointment and dismay over the November 21, 2003 decision of the Pulitzer Prizes Committee not to revoke the Pulitzer Prize awarded to Walter Duranty.
During the Ukrainian Famine/Genocide of 1932-33, Duranty, as a correspondent for the New York Times, wrote articles that denied the fact that over seven million Ukrainians were being deliberately starved to death by the Soviet regime. His articles contributed to the Soviet cover-up of this genocide perpetrated against the Ukrainian people.
An international campaign calling on the Pulitzer Prizes Committee to revoke the Pulitzer Prize awarded to Walter Duranty was initiated in May 2003 by the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association and was supported by the Ukrainian World Congress, the UCC and other Ukrainian national coordinating bodies.
