Українці канадці відзначили трагічну річницю
Українці канадці відзначили 21, 22 і 23 листопада 2003 р. по цілій Канаді 70-ту річницю українського голодомору/ґеноциду 1932-33 рр., який знищив штучним голодом понад сім мільйонів українців.
Ці відзначення були координовані Конґресом Українців Канаду (КУК), Відділами КУК та складовими організаціями КУК. Комісію Голодомору/Ґеноциду при КУК очолювала п-і Марія Шкамбара з Торонта.
Відбулися церковні відправи, дзвони в пам'ять жертв, громадські зустрічі, історичні конференції та збірки харчових продуктів для бідних.
Центральне відзначення голодомору/ґеноциду відбулося 23 листопада 2003 р. у
Convocation Hall
на кампусі Торонтонського Університету.
Під час цих відзначень президент КУК адв. Евген Чолій заявив, що:
"Шоста стаття
Римського Статуту Міжнародного Кримінального Суду
вияснює
ґеноцид,
як:
… один із наступних вчинків поповнений з метою знищити в цілості або частинно національну, етнічну, расову чи релігійну групу, як таку:
a) вбиваючи членів цієї групи;
б) завдаючи серіозну фізичну або психічну шкоду членам цієї групи; або
в) навмисно накладаючи на групу умови життя, які є спрямовані, щоб здійснити її фізичне знищення в цілості або частинно; …
У 1932-33 роках понад 7,000,000 українців згинуло з штучного голоду тоді коли совєтський режим вивозив аж 1,700,000 тон пшениці на Захід.
Такий злочин не можна інакше називати, як
ґеноцид - ґеноцид проти українського народу."

Ukrainian Canadians Mark Tragic Anniversary
On November 21, 22 and 23, 2003, Ukrainian Canadians in all parts of the country marked the 70
th
anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine/Genocide of 1932-33 that caused the deaths by starvation of over seven million Ukrainians.
Commemorative events were coordinated by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), as well as UCC Branches and member organizations. Ms. Mary Szkambara of Toronto acted as the UCC National Famine/Genocide Commemoration Committee Chairperson.
Activities included church liturgies, the tolling of bells in memory of the victims, public meetings, historical conferences and collections of foodstuff for food banks.
The National Famine/Genocide Commemoration took place on November 23, 2003 at the Convocation Hall of the University of Toronto.
During these commemorations, UCC President Eugene Czolij declared:
"Article 6 of the
Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court
defines
genocide
as:
… any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) killing members of the group;
(b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
c) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; …
In 1932-33, over 7,000,000 Ukrainians were being starved to death while the Soviet regime was exporting as much as 1,700,000 tons of grain on Western markets.
This crime cannot be called by any name other than
genocide - a genocide against the Ukrainian people
."
