Facing the Memphis Grizzlies in a Sunday home stand the Los Angeles
Lakers went into the game without the services of their "Big Diesel"
- center Shaquille O'Neal, out indefinitely with a strained calf muscle.
Concern about the fate of the game was compounded by the fact that two
weeks earlier the Grizzlies handed the Lakers one of their few season
losses in Memphis.
Over the course of the first quarter the two teams traded the game lead
playing aggressively. However, starting with second quarter the Lakers
held the lead through the end of the game overpowering the Grizzlies
121-89 on
high percentage shooting and strong defense.
After being sidelined with a bruised heel for almost four weeks and
missing the
first thirteen games Slava Medvedenko made his first contributions of the
season. Concerns that he was coming off an injury as well as not having
participated
in a season game seemed to be dispensed with early on. This was a night
that
Slava was going to better himself by achieving some new career-highs.
In his first minute of play late in the first quarter coming in to give
starter Karl Malone some rest Slava proceeded to startle Grizzlies guard
Mike Miller with a steal. During the rest of the game Slava
played another 29 minutes for a total of 30, besting his previous high
playing
time of 29 almost one year ago. In addition, Slava also achieved his
first career
"double-double" (two important playing statistics in "double" digits).
In shooting he was 7 of 8 tries for 14 points and he pulled down
11 rebounds, another career high for himself as well as the game-high
for the Lakers. Last, he had 2 assists while giving up only
1 turnover and 1 foul.
Not too shabby for his first night's work.
Welcome back Slava!
