Тижня памя'ті жертв Голодомору
1932-1933 років в Україні

Цього року Украіною та Українським народом в усьому світі вшановується 70-та річннця одніеї з найтрагічніших сторінок власної історії - Голодомору 1932-1933 років.
Навмисно націлений проти життєвого осердя української нації, жорстокий терор голодом, вчинений тоталітарним радянським режимом, призвів до загибелі понад семи міпьйонів невинних чоловіків, жінок і дітей.
Лихоліття Голодомору досі залишається важкою психологічною травмою у житті нашого народу. Через сім десятиліть пережита катастрофа постає як один із найбільш вражаючих злочинів, яких будь-коли зазнало людство.
Втім, Голодомор продовжує належати до числа тих національних трагедій, які ще потребують широкого міжнародного визнання. Віримо, що слова підтримки історичної справедливості, які надходять в Україну з усього світу і які нині звучать з Вашингтона та Нью-Йорка, допоможуть привернути світову увагу до ретельно приховуваних подій 30-х років минулого століття.
Україна вдячна урядам, парламентам, представникам громадських, наукових і освітніх кіл тих держав, які висловили свою солідарність з нашим народом в оцінці причин і наслідків Голодомору. Імпульс міжнародної солідарності та підтримки прокладає дорогу дли послання правди, яке, упевнені, досягне найвищих міжнародних трнбун, включно з Організацією Об'єднаних Націй.
Ми не маємо намірів зводити рахунки з минулим.
Ми стверджуємо, що Голодомор, який відбувся в Україні у 1932-1933 роках, став актом геноциду проти нашої нації.
Відтак, ми прагнемо запобігти повторенню подібних злочинів і трагедій і завдяки спільним міжнародним зусиллям зробити новий внесок в утвердження у світі демократичних принципів поваги до прав і свобод людини задля майбутнього людства.
Користуючись нагодою, хочу від імені української держави висловити слова вдячності учасникам Тижня пам'яті жертв Голодомору, який проводиться у Нью-Йорку, за їхню важливу допомогу, підтримку і розуміння у досягненні нашої спільної мети.

by the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma
on the occasion of the holding in New York
of the Remembrance Week of the Great Famine
in Ukraine of 1932-33
15 November 2003
This year Ukraine and Ukrainian people around the world commemorate the 70th anniversary of one of the most tragic pages in our history - the Great Famine of 1932-33 (Holodomor).
Deliberately targeted against the vital core of the Ukrainian nation the cruel terror by hunger carried out by the totalitarian Soviet regime led to the deaths of more than 7 million of innocent men, women and children.
The scourge of Holodomor still remains a heavy psychological trauma in the consciousness of our people. After seven decades this catastrophe emerges as one of the most shocking crimes ever experienced by humankind.
And yet, Holodomor continues to be among those national tragedies that still await wide international recognition. We believe that the words of support in its quest for historical justice which Ukraine has received from around world - and these days from Washington and New York -- will help us turn the world's attention to the events of the 30's of the past century, which had been painstakingly concealed for decades.
Ukraine is grateful to the governments, parliaments and representatives of the civil, scientific and academic circles of those states, which expressed their solidarity with our people in the assessment of the causes and consequences of Holodomor. The impetus of international solidarity and support paves the way for a message of truth, which, we are convinced, will reach the highest international forums, including the United Nations.
We do not intend to settle scores with the past.
We declare that Holodomor, which took place in Ukraine in 1932-1933, proved to be an act of genocide against our nation.
Therefore, we strive to prevent a recurrence of similar crimes and tragedies and through joint international efforts to make a new contribution to the strengthening of the democratic principles of respect for human rights and freedoms for the sake of future generations.
Taking this opportunity, on behalf of the State of Ukraine I would like to express gratitude to the participants of the Famine Remembrance Week, now taking place in New York, for their important assistance, support and understanding in the attainment of our common goal.
