UCC President raises Tuzla crisis with the government of Canada
In response to the crisis near Ukraine's island of Tuzla, Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) President Eugene Czolij expressed the concerns of the Ukrainian Canadian community to the Government of Canada regarding Russia's encroachments on the sovereign territory of Ukraine.
In his letter of October 28, 2003 to the Honourable William Graham, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Czolij stated that the UCC condemns Russia's blatant disregard of Ukraine's borders, which threatens peace and stability in Europe, and calls upon the Government of Canada to clearly reaffirm Canada's support for the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Later that same day, the UCC President spoke with the Honourable Gar Knutson, Secretary of State (Central and Eastern Europe and Middle East), reiterating these points and asking for Canada to address the Tuzla crisis.
On October 29, 2003, the Government of Canada issued a statement regarding Russia's attempt to connect the Russian mainland to the Ukrainian island of Tuzla, encouraging a negotiated settlement of the dispute.
"The Government of Canada should continue to monitor the Tuzla crisis so that the international principles of territorial integrity and inviolability of borders of sovereign states are respected," said UCC President Eugene Czolij.

Президент КУК підніс справу тузлівської кризи з урядом Канади
З огляду на кризу біля українського Тузлівського острова, президент Конґресу Українців Канади (КУК) Евген Чолій висловив Урядові Канади стурбовання
української канадської громади відносно вторгання Росії на суверенну територію України.
У своєму листі до міністра закордонних справ дост. Віліяма Ґрейгама з дня 28 жовтня 2003 р., адв.Чолій заявив, що КУК засуджує явне нехтування Росією
кордонів України, що загрожує мирові й стабільності в Европі та закликає Уряд Канади відкрито заявити підтримку Канади незалежності й територіальної
недоторкальності України.
В цей саме день, у розмові з державним секретарем Центральної й Східної Европи та Близького Сходу дост. Ґер Нутсеном, президент КУК порушив ці справи та
просив, щоб Канада зайняла становище у відношенню до Тузлівської кризи.
Уряд Канади видав становище 29 жовтня 2003 р. відносно спроби Росії сполучити російський Таманський півострів з українським островом Тузла, заохочуючи
вирішити конфлікт у дипломатичний спосіб.
“Уряд Канади повинен дальше спостерігати за Тузлівською кризою, щоб міжнародні принципи територіяльної цілісності та недоторкальності кордонів суверенних
держав були шановані,” заявив президент КУК Евген Чолій.
