New York Ukrainians protest Russian agression in Ukraine
New York - Taking issue with the construction of a dam over the island of Tuzla that threatens Ukraine's territorial rights and sovereignty, a group of protesters gathered near the Russian diplomatic mission yesterday on East 67th Street in Manhattan in order to voice their objections. The demonstration, organized by the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) along with the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and the Organization for the Defense of Four Freedoms for Ukraine, was one of three that were taking place around the country. The others were scheduled in Washington, DC, and Chicago.

By chanting "No! to Tzar Putin" and "Russian claws off Ukraine" - the latter a reference to Russia as the allegorical bear, and the former harking back to Russia's dark past of tyrannical authoritarianism - a comparison was drawn to the current policies of Russian President Putin which are seen as dangerously aggressive to its neighbor, Ukraine. The protesters also called on U.S. President Bush to stand by the United States' promise to support Ukraine after removing its nuclear arsenal, which was inherited from the former Soviet state. The U.S. has been silent thus far.
Askold Lozynskyj, President of the UWC, is convinced that the problem will be resolved soon. He continued by saying that Ukraine's territorial rights are unambiguous - "Tuzla was always a part of the Crimean Peninsula, and the Crimea is in Ukraine." Talks between Russia and Ukraine are to commence today.

The Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations at 138 East 67th Street.
|
It is unclear why a plaque for the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations is hung at the door to the Russian Mission (see center right).
As a former republic of the Soviet Union, Ukraine remains part owner of the property on East 67th St. However, headquarters for Ukraine's Permanent Mission to the UN have been relocated to East 51st Street.
