Join "Do the right thing" Campaign Targeting the New York Times
The UCCA (Ukrainian Congress Committee of America) has joined the "Do The Right Thing" international campaign directed at the chairman and publisher of The New York Times, Arthur Sulzberger Jr.
Initiated by the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association, in collaboration with Ukrainian organizations from around the world, the UCCA hopes to persuade Mr. Sulzberger to return the 1932 Pulitzer Prize awarded to the late Walter Duranty. Duranty, who is now widely recognized as having been an apologist for the Soviet regime, filed many disingenuous reports about conditions in the USSR while writing for The New York Times during the early 1930s. In particular, he has been denounced for covering up the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide of 1932-1933 during which seven to ten million innocent victims perished as a result of the Soviet policy of forced collectivization. That Duranty knew the truth is evident from the fact that he privately informed the British government, in September 1933, that as many as 10 million people had died as a result of famine conditions during the past year. In public, however, Duranty dismissed all such reports, going even further by vilifying those journalists who courageously reported the truth about this man-made famine.
As you know, the first phase of the postcard campaign, which was directed to the Pulitzer Prize Board, has come to a close, with tens of thousands of postcards delivered and hundreds more sent electronically. We are now asking our community to join the second phase of this campaign targeting The New York Times by logging on to the UCCA’s website at www.ucca.org and electronically sending a postcard to Mr. Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., Chairman and Publisher of The New York Times. Time is of the essence, as the decision whether or not to revoke Duranty’s Pulitzer Prize is expected in mid-November.
“Do the right thing!” and Join the Campaign to Revoke Walter Duranty’s Pulitzer Prize.
UCCA, October 23, 2003.
