Chicago, IL. – The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is pleased to present the premier showing of Nature Delivers: Urban Gardening and Beyond, beginning on May 30. Curated by Chicago artists Julia Hechtman and Scott Wolniak the show features eight artists and a musical trio who bring together diverse styles, processes and visions.
Beauty, simplicity, and the vernacular landscape are featured in the works of each artist, taking into account notions of the sublime. The 19th century model of the sublime was one of nobility and inspiration. The artists represented here, however, engage the sublime by conceding that it exists in the minutiae and detail of every-day subject matter. Various technological and experiential filters allow for subjective viewpoints and articulations on a natural world that, for most of contemporary society, has been reduced to symbolic status.
Artists include: Paul Dickinson (sound installation), Derek Fansler (sculpture), Katy Fischer (sculpture), Julia M. Hechtman (photographs), Dennis Kowalski (video installation), Inigo Manglano-Ovalle (video), Claire Pentecost (sound installation and drawings), The Singing Flowers (listening station), Scott Wolniak (drawings), with an essay by Nicholas Frank.
The opening reception will be held on May 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibition will be on view until June 28. UIMA, located at 2320 W. Chicago Avenue, is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information about UIMA please call 1-773-227-5522 or visit www.uima-art.org.
