BRAMA, May 8, 2003, 1:00 am ET The "Rushnyk Nadiji" (Ritual Cloth of Hope) was conceived by the The Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center in Philadelphia as a tribute to the Ukrainian victims of HIV/AIDS. It was officially unveiled on Saturday May 3 as part of the Aids in Ukraine Awareness Weekend. The "Rushnyk" is comprised of 100 5x5 inch squares, plus 7 smaller embroideries at the center. It measures 12' in length and 25" in width. Most of the embroideries were sent in from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but several arrived from various cities in Connecticut, Illinois, New York, and Tennessee. The range of contributors' ages (of those who reported age) was from 5 to 94, with the average age at 41.6. "Rushnyk Nadiji" will be framed and displayed permanently in the Gallery of the UECC to remember the victims of AIDS in Ukraine. The embroiderers: The list of names is set up as follows: 20 groups of 5; the first group is the 5 embroideries, top to bottom, in the first column on the left; the 2nd group is the second column (left to right), etc. The 7 items in the middle are listed at the end.
