Launch of the Archives of the Ukrainian Canadian Experience and Pysanka Lecture
The University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections, along with the
Department of German and Slavic Studies and the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian
Studies, are co-sponsoring the official launch of the Archives of the Ukrainian
Canadian Experience. The launch will include a lecture by Orysia Tracz (Collections
Management, University of Manitoba Libraries) on Ukrainian Easter eggs or Pysanky,
entitled, Pysanka: More Than Just an Egg Symbolism of the Ukrainian Easter Egg. Accompanying
the launch and lecture will be an exhibit (April 8 - May 2, 2003) in the Elizabeth Dafoe Library
featuring materials pertaining to pysanky, and to the Archives.
The mandate of the new Archives will be to gather papers, documents, photographs and other archives
from individuals and institutions in the Ukrainian community about Ukrainian life in Canada.
These individual collections will form a strong collective archives, one that will complement the
efforts of other local institutions in preserving the Ukrainian culture in Canada.
The event will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 4:30 p.m. in the Iceland Reading Room, Elizabeth Dafoe Library,
