In an unusual and too infrequent move Los Angeles Lakers
coach Phil Jackson slated Stanislav Medvedenko to start
as power forward in the Lakers' 3/31 hosted contest against
the Memphis Grizzlies. This was Slava's eighth start of the
season and first since Feb. 19th.
The move proved to be auspicious for the Lakers. In the first period,
not only did Slava contribute 5 points (equal to that of Kobe Bryant's
first period scoring) he excelled defensively, holding Grizzly
star Pau Gasol scoreless.
After sitting out the 2nd period Slava returned to the game
for the 3rd adding another
6 points to the Lakers' tally and continuing to pull in
rebounds. For the night, on 23 minutes of play
Slava was 5 for 10 in scoring, 1 for 2
from the free throw line, and he grabbed 6 rebounds (5 defensive)
while only giving up 1 personal foul and 1 turnover.
Coach Phil Jackson commented, "It was an opportunity for Slava.
We need somebody offensively that can hold his own.
We also need guys that can hustle defensively and rebound for us."
The final tally in the Los Angeles win over Memphis - 110-94.
