DEMONSTRATION
OF UKRAINIAN EASTER EGGS DECORATION
The Ukrainian term for decorated Easter eggs "
PYSANKY
" comes from the verb "pysaty", which means to write, because the decorated Easter egg "pysanka" (plural: "pysanky") is being written on.
The tradition of decorating eggs originated many thousands years ago, when the ancestors of modern Ukrainians believed that eggs "written on" with certain symbols embodied certain magic powers to overcome the evil spirits, to release new energy associated with the Spring, etc. With the introduction of Christianity in Ukraine in the tenth century A.D., Christian symbols were added to reflect the Resurrection and a promise of eternal life.
Some of the ancient symbols are: birds - fertility, deer - wealth/prosperity, dots or small circles - many years, wheat - bountiful harvest. The new Christian symbols: triangle - Holy Trinity, the 8-point star - ancient symbol for Jesus Christ, cross, and others.
The process of "writing pysanky" may appear difficult, but it is very simple. This ancient art will be demonstrated by
Chrystyna K. Lazor
of Venice in the Juliano Room of the North Port Area Public Library, 13800 S. Tamiami Trail (corner of S. Biscayne Dr. & U.S. 41) Tuesday, April 15, 2003 starting at 6:30 P.M.
The Ukrainian American Club of Southwest Florida, organized for the purpose of creating an opportunity for the Americans of Ukrainian descent to actively work with the American community in making available knowledge of ancient Ukrainian culture, is proud to sponsor this event and to invite all our neighbors to attend.
