Gogol Bordello Launches Second North American Tour
Gogol To Perform at SXSW on Friday, March 14
Gogol Bordello
|
New York New York's underground gypsy punk rockers
Gogol Bordello
will kick off their second North American tour with two nights at North Six in Williamsburg on Feb. 28 and March 1. Gogol will also make a stop at this year's SXSW (www.sxsw.com) on Friday, March 14 at Red Eyed Fly.
The band's first North American tour last Sept./Oct garnered massive critical attention. In fact,
The Denver Post
included Gogol Bordello's debut show in Denver as one of the Top Concerts of 2002, alongside Elvis Costello, Beck, Bob Dylan, Flaming Lips, Paul McCartney and Bright Eyes to name a few. Here's what they said about Gogol's live show…"If ever there was a gelled intensity, if ever there was a collective passion, it was present on this night when New York psycho-nuts Gogol Bordello took about 150 to cool school. While some bands say they play music because they love it… it's obvious that the Bordello boys and girls are touring and recording (check out this year's sharp "Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony) because they have to share their untamed Ukranian-punk music with the world.
Lead singer Eugene Hutz cut his teeth on bands such as The Birthday Party and Einstürzende Neubauten and writhes Iggy Pop-style over lilting rhythms and a rich blend of musical styles. On their new album, "Multi Kontra Culti," Hutz spins macabre and often hilarious tales of the immigrant experience. Combining elements of punk rock with traditional Ukranian sounds and storytelling, elaborate props, and complex stage sets, Gogol Bordello relays aspects of many recent diasporic realities and creates for us all a uniquely infectious spectacle that offers up nothing short of a new, free-for-all theater of anarchy. These show are not to be missed!
Gogol Bordello also features musicians Sergey Ryabtsev (violin), Oren Kaplan (guitar), Yuri Lemeshev (accordian), Ori Kaplan (sax), Eliot "the lone American" Ferguson (drums) as well as Susan Donaldson and Pamela Racine (The Gogol Dance Troop).
In addition to performing at The Whitney Museum's Biennial last spring, Gogol Bordello is set to perform at the Tate Modern's exhibit "Tate & Egg Live" in London on July 18. For more information and a schedule of events please visit http://www.tateandegglive.com.
"The most exciting rock music coming out of New York right now isn't being made by art-damaged 80's revivalists - it's being made by Ukrainian born singer / guitarist / dj / activist / writer Eugene Hutz and his crew of Russian, Israeli and American noise makers known collectively as Gogol Bordello."
-- CMJ New Music
"A Ukranian singer, Russian Fiddler, Israeli guitar player, Floridian drummer, Russian accordionist and Israeli sax man walk into a bar. Then, if it's Gogol Bordello, they tear the place to shreds."
- Rolling Stone Magazine
"Gogol Bordello makes music an exciting proposition….they'll save our souls from the crippling effects of indifference and make you feel like you have gypsy blood coursing through your veins."
-- Global Rhythm Magazine
