Call your Congressman
To the Brama Readership and Editors of Ukrainian-American publications:
For months, the U.S. Administration has been embarrassed by the weakness of its case for war. Inspectors have just begun their work. The previous round of inspections - with less strength than this one - destroyed more Iraqi weapons than were destroyed in the 1991 war.
Wouldn't it be better to let inspectors destroy any possible weapons than to risk having them used against our troops or civilians?
The weakest link in the war case has been any alleged connection between Iraq and Al Qaeda. Even the CIA has repeatedly said they share only distrust: Al Qaeda scorns Saddam's secularism, while Saddam stresses tight control by the state and would transfer weapons only under attack.
Mr. Bush has completely failed to make the case that Iraq poses a threat to our national security that justifies a military invasion. He is diverting vast resources - both dollars and people - away from actions to combat terrorism and essential domestic priorities.
Congress needs to reconsider the Bush Administration's rush to war. The inspectors should be given time to work and Mr. Bush contained. Consequently, we encourage Congress to Repeal President Bush's Blank Check for War. Democratic Representative DeFazio and Republican Representative Paul have introduced legislation that rescinds the unilateral grant of war making power to Mr. Bush.
It needs and deserves your support now.
We encourage all like-minded American citizens of Ukrainian ancestry to petition their Congressional Representatives. Senate names and addresses are available online at www.senate.gov. The House directory is online at www.house.gov.
Urge your member of Congress to cosponsor and support Representatives DeFazio and Paul's legislation to revoke the unilateral grant of war making powers to Mr. Bush.
